>>>Two days before high school:
I was unable to speak amid the babble of conversation. Everyone was so thrilled about our entry into high school. The video call was turning into a chatroom. Juanita couldn't stop rambling about the high school jocks.
We were all so eager to meet and sort things out before D-day because our parents were out of town.
Mariam, Amanda, Analetizia, Sanjuanita and I have always been close since we were little, and now we were going to high school together.
We were so excited that two days before we entered high school, we organized a get-together for the five of us to sleep over and try on our new uniforms.
Mariam suggested we all choose the same classes so we can always be together, however Ana suggested it would be better if we all chose what we are good at, and the rest nodded in agreement.
'Mandy and Juanita, you guys should stop this childishness before we reach the school, it would be weird seeing two high school black beauties playing 'jinx!' I said in a mocking tone
'Yes mommy' Juanita and Mandy mocked
'And yes, why are you calling us black beauties as if we are the only black girls going to be there' Juanita asked
'of course, we aren't going to be the only blacks there but I'm just trying to remind you how beautiful black girls are.
And despite your having European features doesn't change the fact that your mom is a Ghanaian.
And yes, you are half Mexican, AND GHANAIAN!' I retorted, with emphasis on the last words.
'Yoo Deeya chill, we came here to have fun and talk, not to be arguing about our race.' Ana exclaimed, giving me the mom look.
'Juanita I'm sorry for lashing out at you I said, with an apologetic look
'It's fine Deeya, I know because it's a British school and the fees are quite expensive only a few Ghanaians would be able to attend it and a lot of European tourists' Juanita sighed
'Are you girls done with your boring convo it's getting late and we won't be able to talk about anything Mandy added
'I was thinking so too, I thought they would never stop' Mari exclaimed
'Ok girls where do we start' Ana said with a voice filled with excitement
'The boy ssssssssss' Juanita said with a wink
'Girl, why are you acting like a snake' I said nervously trying to change the topic.
'Girlll, I see what you are trying to do there, ehhh you want to change the topic huh' Mariam said teasingly
'Why would I, I mean I'm not afraid of boys but we are only 16-year-old girls isn't that too young to have a boyfriend I said whiles a bead of sweat hung on my forehead
'Our age is not an excuse girllll have you seen, those nine, ten-year-olds with boyfriends?' Mandy exclaimed
'Why do you always get anxious when we start talking about boys? Don't you like boys?' Ana said with a smirk
'No, it's not like that. I just feel uncomfortable talking about boys' I sighed
'Come on we are going to high school put all the middle school hate for boys aside, the boys there are going to be different and not suckers like the ones in middle school' Juanita said
