Jay and her class friends have been listening in on all the gossip about the new Wolves (Mai doesn't, Jay pretends not to listen but does, and Reyelle and Tatiana think its cute that Jay has a Wolf crush for the Alpha so they let her pretend). So far what they have heard is that Alpha Daniel's name is Jefferson, he's 26 and came into Alphadom when he was 20. He has a huge pack, most of the packmates are Wolves. He's been looking to expand his pack, and helping his packmates find Mates was hitting two birds with one stone. The others are all Betas, and they are all higher end Betas. There isn't much more on the Betas, but they managed to scrap lots about the Alpha. Jay plays it cool, but on the inside she's squealing in excitement. Tatiana and Reyelle giggle to themselves, but don't say anything because they are too busy admiring Jay's first Wolf crush.
They talked about the Daniel Pack all the way up till the day prior to the Run. Everyone is up early and fretting about what they should wear (for the Run they were advised to wear they bare minimum, most went for sports bras and shorts, boys went for just shorts).
But while everyone is up insanely early in preparation for the big day, Jay is sound asleep. Malone snuffles up into her hair, but hears the sound of Jay's mother making noise in the kitchen. It's been Malone's alarm for ages. Getting out from the blankets he looks at Jay for sometime, before he starts yipping. Then he starts to dig at her side, and it coaxes a groan of protest from Jay.
"Five more minutes, just give me five," she mumbles sleepily. Of course Malone doesn't, instead he's already jumping on her. It's Malone's number one technique that gets Jay up. It works 100%. "Oh my god, I'm up, I'm up!" Jay says grumpily, pushing Malone off her she gets up. She was almost going to have a shower when she remembers what day it is.
"I guess we don't need to shower today. Which, gross, the Wolves are such freaks when it comes to scent," Jay says and goes into her closet for something comfortable. "What's more weird is that we have to show as much skin as possible, and that doesn't leave much room for modesty. Good thing they didn't ban clothes all together. I would have run away to escape such humiliation," she says to Malone who is now whining beside her. Probably begging to go outside so he can get his daily treat. "Okay, okay. I'll be quick."
Jay has her black sports bra on and her matching shorts. Until the Run actually happens Jay has decided to where a loose shirt. The rules didn't say she couldn't where one before the Run started.
When she gets downstairs her mother has her cup of coffee and is looking out the window, a blank look on her face. It makes Jay's heart hurt, her mom only got those looks when she was thinking about her dad. It wasn't very often, but it happened every now and then.
"Oh," is her mother's soft reply when she notices that Jay is in front of her. "Are you going to where that shirt when you run?" Her mother doesn't sound judgemental, it's innocent curiosity.
"No, I just don't want to be ogled by everyone until I absolutely must. What were you thinking about?" Jay decides to ask. Her mother has a sad look on her face.
"I was wondering what it would be like to be a Wolves Mate. Your father never met his until he was much older, and it was a fluke at that. Everyone always told us that we were destined to love Humans, but clearly they were wrong," she gestures to nothing, but Jay understands. Her father was ecstatic to find that he had a Mate, had previously given up all hope and got married, but the second she appeared in his life he dropped everything so easily. Jay, Tay and Jamie were left to pick up the pieces of their mother's heart. They had sworn that they could never love the Wolves, that they were so selfish and dominating. But then Jamie's third Run he met Juniper, and it made everyone in their family question themselves. Do you let your pride get in the way of love? Do you follow societies views about being a Mate? Is it even love? Wasn't being a Mate just choosing the one that would produce the strongest offspring? Or was it true like what the old Wolves said, did soul mates exist?
