Josh dropped me off at the beach once it was apparent I left my phone in my locker. I gave him my number before I got out of the car so we could hang out or something another day. Josh made me smile and laugh which was refreshing from the intensity and tummy turning I feel when I hang out with Spencer, and the protectiveness and relaxation I feel during the countless hours I'm with Will. I really did enjoy tonight.
My locker is probably the most stubborn and rustiest out of all the lockers there. I fumble with my lock for a few minutes before my locker bursts open and I dig for my phone behind the extra bathing suits and my board and finally manage to snag it and stuff it in the back pocket of my shorts. I slam my locker shut only to see the broad shoulder figure of Spencer.
I screamed.
"Holy shit Spencer, you can't just spring up on someone like that!" I punch him in the chest with force.
Spencer rubs the spot where my fist came in contact and just stares at me.
"Why are you even here? It's almost midnight" I ask.
"I was waiting for you! We had a meeting Maddie. I know I was almost twenty minutes late but I had to deal with something. Do you even still want to do this?!" He screams at me not holding back at all.
"Of cour-"
"And whose hoodie is that?!" He exclaims "wait let me guess you blew me off for your precious Will didn't you!"
"Spencer" he just kept blabbing on and on.
"SPENCER!" He looked at me, eyebrows furrowed and his sapphire eyes bore into mine giving me his full attention.
"Listen, I waited for you. But the wind picked up and I had to chase down my wrap and someone grabbed it and then they whisked me off to eat and stuff. So don't make me look like a bad guy because I came directly after school and waited for nearly an hour and a half." I throw back in his face.
Spencer starts towards me; the boy strides up and towers over me only a few inches from my face. My eyes look up from his chest to his eyes. We are a mere three inches away from each other now and then he spins around and puts his arms behind his head shaking his head in the distance.
"So you weren't with Will?" He turns back around, far away from me now and looks me in the eye.
"No" I say sincerely.
"Come on Blondie I'll drive you home." His hand touches the small of my back urging me forward to his moms car.
I don't even understand why it would matter if I was with Will. Those two aren't friends but I didn't think they hated each other either. Then again Will has been ranting about how much time I've been spending with Spencer training recently and Spence is more passive aggressive, sometimes glaring at people out of the corner of his eye. By people I mean Will and Rebecca.
Speaking of Will I check my phone and find 6 missed calls from Spencer, 1 from home, 1 from my dad and 8 from Will along with a few texts from Spencer too. Man for only having two friends they are more worried than my parents are about me!
I debate calling Will or my mom but I decide that I'll see my mom soon enough and Will I would see at school tomorrow anyway.
Spencer is drumming his fingers on the steering wheel in tune to "Old School" while I tried to occupy myself. That wasn't too hard though because my brain was buzzing with thoughts going left and right. You go on a date once and the whole world seems to be pissed at you!
Spencer pulled into my driveway and said he was right behind me as I walked myself inside. It was like he was afraid I was going to take off again. Will was lying on the couch lazily playing "Skate 3" on my Xbox when I came in through the door.
Noticing my arrival through the door Will jumped up and the remote control went flying in the air.
"Mads!" He exclaimed rushing over and engulfing me in a huge hug. He then released his grip on me and gave me the same stern look that Spencer did just a half hour earlier.
"Listen Maddie, when I said you should get Spencer Brady to train you I didn't think you'd be out till midnight and always spending your time with him! Honestly it's like we aren't even best friends anymore! Midnight Maddie, it's passed midnight!" Will, like Spencer goes off on me with the same built up tension.
"She wasn't even with me." Spencer comes in the door and talks in a oddly cold and firm way, jaw set.
And that's when World War lll broke out in my kitchen.
"What do you mean she wasn't with you. She went to hang with you. To train with you."
"Well she wasn't with me!"
"Then you lost track of her? Unbelievable"
"I wasn't around her in the first place. Your the last one who saw her before she jetted off to who knows where. So your the one who lost her."
"Oh plea-"
"Guys!" I interrupt getting in between them. "I'm the border ok? Your Canada" I point at Will "and your the United States." I point at Spencer "Now if you want to be in my life then you need to coexist with each other. Got it?"
They both just mumbled and tried to avoid eye contact with me as I look back and forth between the two boys.
"Now both of you leave." I demand.
And so they left.
Frustrated I climbed the stairs to my bedroom got in my comfy pajamas and climbed on the roof with my baby blue duvet. The stars were just barely seen behind a thin layer of clouds and there was a chill to the air but I couldn't sleep. It had been a long night and my emotions were as turbulent as a roller coaster.
After a little bit my mom crawled on the roof with me, and we talked for what seemed like forever. We talked about Spencer, and Will and she was the first person I told about my meeting and date with Josh.
Recapping the date made me awestruck, it was surreal to think that I did that. I mean we broke into a fucking space museum!
I almost forgot about Josh's hoodie. I probably should return it but I don't have his number. My mom noticed it and gave me a secret grin.
I appreciated her listening to me, and I mean she brought me ice cream so I really couldn't hate on her.
Ever since Charlie died I've felt disconnected from the family. My dad is outright annoying and overbearing and I'm pretty sure my parents are only still together because Charlie died. I think it would be better though if they just got divorced.
My mom left my room around 1:30 and told me to get off the roof and get some sleep. I just couldn't though. My brain is going 100 different directions at once and it's almost like My brain is a hard drive and water has been dumped all over it.
I crawled into bed anyway and sunk into the familiar furniture. Just as I got comfy my phone went off.
Josh: hey goldilocks! it's josh!
And I was out like a lightweight a smile on my face.
