Whenever Greta caught a glance at Malfoy, she smirked and thought about what Hermione had told her after she went and yelled at Malfoy for Greta."It was so funny!" Hermione had told her. "When I found Malfoy, I hit him right in the face and told him to knock it off with the insults. He looked so scared when I threatened him afterwards. He ran away whimpering like a hurt puppy!"
"Hermione, what did you threaten him with?" Greta had asked curiously.
"I told him I would turn him into a bug so I could squash him," Hermione said with pride.
Just the thought of that made Greta giggle uncontrollably. Whenever Malfoy passed by Greta in the hallway, he would glance at her with fear and quickly look away. It felt great to have him stop bullying her. That also gave Greta more opportunities to chat with Cedric without anything going wrong. It was wonderful! In fact, Greta had gone to see Cedric and Harry compete in the Triwizard Tournament for the first two rounds. The two boys had done very well fighting the dragons and saving people from the mermaids. It was really hard to decide who to root for however because Cedric and Harry were both Greta's friends.Right before Christmas break was when things got incredibly awkward. Professor McGonagall had announced that the students all had to attend the Yule Ball, which was a ball that occurred during the Triwizard Tournament. Everyone on Hogwarts campus agreed that this was going to be one of the worst experiences ever. Greta however felt neutral about it. In fact, she loved dances! She just wasn't sure that she would enjoy doing weird dance routines.
She was especially nervous about finding a date for the dance. Malfoy had really made her feel insecure about what boys thought about her. Especially boys she liked, like Cedric for example. Greta was scared that Cedric would break her heart, so she decided to see if Cedric would ask her first. Even if Cedric didn't ask her, she would still have her friends to go with. Then again, they might all find their own dates to go with and leave Greta completely stranded. This was all too much to think about.
"Greta, guess what just happened?" Hermione asked excitedly one day before the Yule Ball.
"What happened?" Greta gasped curiously.
"I just got asked by Viktor Krum to the Yule Ball!" Hermione squealed.
"Viktor Krum?! That's amazing! I'm incredibly happy for you," Greta cheered.
"Tomorrow night is going to be the best night ever!" Hermione rambled on. "Viktor Krum is so charming. I bet he's really good at dancing."
Suddenly, Harry approached Greta and Hermione awkwardly.
"Hi, Harry," Greta greeted. "What's up?"
"Greta, I was just wondering if you'd wanttogototheballwithme?" Harry asked quickly. He looked down at the ground.
"I'm sorry! I couldn't hear you."
"Um, would you like to go to the ball with me?"
"Oh, um, sure! I'd love to, Harry," Greta smiled politely.
Harry looked up at Greta and beamed, "Really? Thank you so much!" He gave Greta a big hug then left waving goodbye and smiling widely.
"Do you like Harry?" Hermione smirked. Greta blushed beet red.
"N-no, I don't!" Greta denied, flailing her arms around. "He's just a friend. I'm just glad that I finally got a date."
"Who do you like then?" Hermione asked.
"Cedric…" Greta admitted.
"Huh, I didn't even think that you had any feelings for him," Hermione chuckled. "I gotta admit, he is really cute. It's too bad he's already going with Cho Chang."
"Who's Cho Chang?"
"Cedric's girlfriend," Hermione said slowly. "I thought he would tell you that. You two are friends after all."
Feeling severely heartbroken, Greta muttered, "Yeah, I wonder why…"
Time Skip
The next day, Hermione, Luna Lovegood, Ginny Weasley, and Greta all went shopping for ball gowns at Hogsmeade. The four of them all had fun and chatted about their dates to the ball all day long. Luna had picked out a royal blue gown, Hermione had picked out a light pink gown, Ginny had picked out a flaming red gown, and Greta had picked out a lavender purple gown. Satisfied with their shopping, the girls headed back to Hogwarts to get ready for the Ball.
As she changed into her gown, Greta asked, "Hermione, do you think this night will go well?"
Hermione looked over at Greta. "Of course it will. Why wouldn't it be?"
"I just… have a feeling that something will go wrong," Greta replied.
Hermione strutted over to Greta. "Greta, I believe that everything's going to be alright. Don't worry about it! Just try to have fun."
"Thanks, Hermione."
"Ready to meet our dates?"
"Yep! Let's go."
Harry and Viktor were waiting right outside the Gryffindor common room with a flower in their hands.
Viktor presented his flower first to Hermione and said, "You look absolutely stunning, Miss Granger."
Hermione blushed, took Viktor's hand, and walked away with him.
Then, Harry stepped forward and gave Greta his flower. "Hello, Greta! You look beautiful in that dress."
"Thank you, Harry. You look great, too," Greta smiled. Harry blushed a little as he led Greta to the ballroom.
An announcer spoke overhead, "Ladies and gentlemen, I now present our next couple… Harry Potter and Greta Clayton!" Everyone turned towards the two and cheered wildly. Harry and Greta looked at the ground in embarrassment. Harry looked up and saw Ron with a pair of identical twin girls.
"You have two dates?" Harry asked as he and Greta approached Ron.
"They made me take both of them," Ron shrugged. "Is Greta your date?"
"Er, yes," Harry said nervously. Ron nodded approvingly. He then brought his voice down to a whisper and said, "Do you see Hermione dancing with that big buffoon, Krum?"
Harry nodded.
"It's crazy, right?! He doesn't deserve her. She's too good for him," Ron grumbled.
As Ron and Harry rambled on about Hermione and Krum, Greta glanced awkwardly at the twins, who seemed to be thinking the same thing as her. Their dates were being kind of rude.
"That's it! I can't take it anymore," Ron decided when the music paused. "I'm going to have a chat with Hermione."
"I'm coming with you," Harry added.
"Guys, wait! Hermione's gonna get mad at you," Greta warned. However, she had lost sight of Harry and Ron. One of the twins started tearing up.
"He's such a jerk!" she wailed. "Why would he even bother asking us if he was just going to abandon us?" The other twin wrapped her arm around her sister's shoulder to comfort her.
"Are you ok?" the other sister asked Greta. "Your date just left you, too."
"Um, I'm fine. I'll just go and sit down over there," Greta replied. She left the twins to sit down in a nearby chair. She felt horrible that her suspicion was correct and she just wanted to disappear. Greta felt humiliated, angry, sad, and lonely. That was enough to get her to start crying a bit. She just wanted somebody to dance with her.
"That was kind of rude of Potter to ditch you like that, wasn't it?" a familiar voice drawled.
Greta looked up and saw Malfoy standing in front of her, his hand reaching out towards her.
"Care to have this dance?"
