EXTENDED SUMMARY

it was the week before spring break in 1986, and carrie cunningham was thriving. how could she not be? she was practically handed the keys to high school success: her sister chrissy was the captain of the cheer team, the most popular girl in school, and carrie was right on track to follow in her footsteps.

but the night of the state championship basketball game, chrissy never comes back home. and the next morning, the cops are at carrie's door speaking of unsolved murder and mutilated corpses.

in her quest to avenge her sister's death and unmask her killer, carrie runs into max mayfield, and her life changes forever as she learns dark secrets about hawkins - and her past - that she couldn't imagine in her worst nightmares.

NOTES

- so, as much as i love lumax, max and lucas never get back together in this, but they do stay super close friends

- if you couldn't tell, carrie's "dark secret" is that she's a lesbian

- even before the book, carrie had sorta been crushing on max from a distance. she's in denial that she has a crush, and rationalizes it by saying that she wants to be her friend or that she feels bad for her for losing her stepbrother in the fire or something

- carrie is a smart cookie and figures out that eddie is hiding in reefer rick's boathouse (idk you figure it out, i'm not the smart cookie here)

- she's about to beat the total crap out of him, but max and the rest of the gang return to the boathouse with eddie's food and drinks and stuff just before carrie rocks eddie's shit

- they calm her down, and explain everything. she's like super confused, and isn't totally convinced, but after seeing how timid and fearful eddie was when she confronted him, she figures that he couldn't have killed chrissy, and decides to go along with them (totally not because she's had a lil crush on max)

- her and max hit it off right away. like they become instant besties, absolutely tearing everyone around them a new one with sarcastic comments

- it's not until she sees max go into her trance at the school that she fully buys into the whole 'vecna' thing

- she like fully freaks the fuck out when max starts levitating at the graveyard

- she and max pair off together at the creel house

- in the finale, both carrie and lucas stay behind with max in the creel house

-while lucas fights jason, carrie tries desperately to wake max up to no avail, going so far as to tell her that she likes her and that she needs to break the curse and that it's not fair

- carrie is a cheerleader. i think i forgot to mention that, but yeah she is. so jason starts calling her a traitor and points his gun at her in the end too before him and lucas fight

- jason manages to knock lucas out before carrie subdues him with a plank of wood

- when max is snapped out of vecna's curse (and snapped in other ways if you know what i mean), she lays crying and sobbing in carrie's arms as the pair tearfully admit their feelings for one another

- when max dies, carrie starts like screaming for help, so loud that the teens hear her in the upside down like this poor girl is absolutely distraught

- she does not leave max's side in the hospital. like you'd have to kill her to get her to leave that room

- it's up to you whether or not you want vecna to curse her. i mean, between being a lesbian in 80s small town indiana to her sister being brutally murdered, ya girl is wracked with trauma

- if you decide to change her name, try to have it start with a 'c' i like the idea of chrissy and *c name* cunningham being these like cutesy names for the sisters
