Emine Hatun was walking down the stairs after her nightly session in the harem, ready to go eat dinner with her sultana and tell her of the new gossip in the harem and try to cheer her up, as the sultan had asked for the very pregnant Hurrem hatun to spend the night with him, and while Mera was surely bothered and upset about it, she’d never say so and show such weak real emotions to anyone, not even her children or her trusted maids.
While passing a corridor she heard ushered whispering, so she slowed her pace and hid behind the wall to listen in, it was Gulsah hatun and her friend, and they were planning on poisoning Hurrem that night.
Emine hatun smiled to herself and rushed to her mistress’ chambers to tell her of her newfound Intel.
Mera Sultan was definitely a hard person to read, and you’d never know which reaction she’d have or whether she would be proud of your work or not, and such responses were definitely influenced by her moods, such as the one Emine hatun found her in.
Mera sultan was already mad about the sultan not calling her back for his second night back, and it seemed that she might be all the happier at the news of the red-haired woman’s death along with her child, deaths who will not be at her hand. But the hatun was wrong, for the shehzades and the little sultana were being fussy and refusing to eat nor sleep without their father’s presence, and only did so when their mother force-feeded them and sent them to their beds, promising them a visit to their royal sire’s chambers, should he be available for them. The children ended up accepting and drifting peacefully to sleep.
Emine hatun did not wait a second to tell the sultan as soon as she was alone. To her surprise, Mera’s first reaction was a shriek.
“Mahidevran is doing what?!”
“I saw and heard it with my own eyes, sultana! I swear!” assured her Emine.
“I know that dear, but how dare she even think about it, no less actually order it? On the sultan’s table? Poison?! She lost it…” muttered Mera angrily.
“So what do we do sultana?”
“We do nothing for now, let us just wait to see if the night brings us any more bad news..” answered Mera before continuing. “No, actually we should send for Rustem, ask him what are the side effects of his poison mixed with Mahidevran’s on the pregnant woman would be, and call Sumbul for me, Mahidevran is a smart woman, one driven stupid by jealousy, but smart nonetheless, and she can be dangerous like she is to us now, we should make sure her poison plot doesn’t fall on our heads, I’d rather I stay alive for my kids and have my trusted friends with me.”Mera finished, with a thoughtful look toward’s Emine at the last part of her small speech.
Once Emine left to carry her orders, Mera brought the menorah candle from her hiding box, she took the Hanukah candles, lit them and sat near her window, watching the candle sticks get smaller and smaller while she prayed silently for everything to pass on swiftly and for God to bring her and her children good health and success.
Emine could not find Sumbul agha, so she instead went looking for Rustem, when she passed the garden on her way back, she almost got caught wandering alone at night by Gulfe hatun, but Emine was quicker and smarter, and was able to see and hear everything that was being said by the concierge Ibrahim and Hatice sultan. Until too aghas came in and summoned Ibrahim on orders of his majesty, Hurrem was sick already, hearing the news, she run off to inform her sultana.
Once she got back, Mera stood up, her eyes wandering around.”Where is Sumbul?”
“I couldn’t find him, so I went looking for Rustem instead, he said that if she survives, then the hakime would have unknowingly extracted all poisons out of her body.” She replied.
“Damn it! Damn you and your spontaneous mind Mahidevran!” cursed Mera under her breath.
“I also found out something else!”
“Well? What is it? If it’s bad news let it wait till tomorrow.” Replied Mera.
“While I was getting back I found Ibrahim and Hatice, alone and talking. It was very annoyingly romantic, thank god the aghas from the sultan’s chamber came looking for him to tell him that Hurrem is sick and that she needs help if it wasn’t for them, I think I’d have vomited-“
Mera interrupted her rambling, “What? She already got sick?”
“Yes, I think that is why I couldn’t find either Sumbul or Nigar in the harem earlier, I even checked the kitchen, Sumbul is always in the kitchen!” exclaimed Emine again.
As soon as she finished talking, various hurried steps sounded in the hallway, one stopping and knocking on the door; it was Sumbul agha, and his face was as grim as the late Sultan Selim.
