Ruby
I walked to our usual meeting place at the end of my street where of course, Nick was already waiting for me, straddling his bike with a smile. I went up on my tiptoes to give him his good morning kiss; as requested by text message this morning, and stared for a minute at his lazy grin before climbing on behind him and he drove us to school.
We stayed glued to each other all morning like we have the past week, always holding hands, even under our desks... it was like I had to have some part of myself connected to Nick; I wasn’t even embarrassed about it anymore, and it’s not like I had to worry about Nick feeling differently because it was obvious he felt the same... I could actually feel it, really feel it like I had his emotions in me but, like in a dream I knew it wasn’t real, or at least that those particular feelings weren’t mine even though I shared them.
The last class before lunch crawled to a close and as we exited it sharply, I tugged on Nick’s hand to stop before he pulled us all the way to the canteen. He stared down at me with an adoring smile and tugged us out of the human traffic headed for the lunch hall.
“Nick?”
“Yeah baby?” Nick pulled me close so that I was flush against his chest and his arms wound around me tightly.
“Can we have lunch by our tree today, just us?”
A slow grin spread his lips. “Of course we can, beautiful. Can I have a kiss?”
Nick was zeroing in on me already; I did want to kiss him – I always do, but I felt a familiar hard pair of eyes on us and shook my head gently.
“Mmhm, outside though.”
Nick frowned. “Why?”
“Because, Mr Bronze is staring at us.”
Nick’s chest vibrated with growls too low for me to hear, his eyes snapping instantly to our Principle who has remained openly unhappy with our relationship. Quickly, before he got too caught up again I rubbed at his chest trying to sooth him.
“Shh, stop, it’s ok.”
Spending only a second more to glare at Jake, Nick nodded and looked down at me with a small smile. “I know, come on Shorty.”
He took my hand again and we walked against the crowd until we made it out into the yard and found ourselves under our tree. The moment we were eclipsed by it’s shade I was pressed against the trunk with demanding lips on mine.
I gave him as good as I got, relishing in his body being pressed against mine again, his hands stroking, caressing and rubbing everywhere like he was checking nothing had changed since the last time he touched me.
Slowly he pulled away, his eyes dark and intense while his breath hit me in pants. I watched as the excitement died and gave way to sadness, the sadness I shared. Nick plopped down onto the grass and so I let myself slide down the bark of the tree until I was next to him again, though breathy and shaky this time in the aftermath of his attack.
