Nick

Ruby was killing me, slowly. At least we’re sleeping in the same bed now, but she won’t let me touch her. The worst part is that I know she wants me to touch her, I can feel it, and I know that I could make us both feel so much better if she’d just let me.

I try talking to her, starting up conversations but they always fall flat. My Shorty isn’t known for her small talk at the best of times, but I thought we were comfortable enough with each other now to just talk about anything, or we were.

We were sitting at the kitchen table, her eating her cereal now she was back from her run – which I followed her on, just in case, although there was a point when she was more at risk from me tackling her than anything else… I love it when she runs, and so does the big guy.

My chin was resting on my fist while I stared at her, looking all perfect as always. She hardly broke a sweat on that five mile run, it kind of made me proud that my Shorty is in shape, she takes care of herself.

“Can’t you find something else to stare at?” She snapped, glaring over her cereal bowl at me. She’s so cute.

“Nothing as beautiful as you.”

I saw her blush before she scowled at me. “Nick, seriously, I’m trying to eat.”

“I’m not stopping you, Shorty. I wish you’d talk to me though.” I murmured, sliding my arm across the table to take her free hand. With eyes like a hawk she watched the movement and pulled her hand away before Ii could touch her.

“Yeah well I wish you weren’t such an ass, but I guess we can’t always get what we want, huh?”

“Ruby, I said I was sorry for Peter – for everything – I don’t understand why you’re still mad at me. Help me out Shorty, please?”

“…No.”

I frowned. “No?”

“No.”

“Ruby, please? I don’t know what to do, tell me what you want me to do and I’ll do it – on my knees if that’s what you want!”

“You can’t do anything Nick, what’s done is done.” She muttered, dropping her spoon into the bowl like she’d lost her appetite before pushing it away, but I couldn’t concentrate on that, not when she was shattering my world, there has to be something I can do.

“Don’t say that, please don’t say that.”

“I don’t know what else to say Nick… I never thought you could be so, cold.”

“Ruby –“

“You just, cut me out like I was nothing… I guess it was worse because you were the only one who ever made me believe I was anything more than that.”

Ruby stared down at the floor and my heart lurched in my chest like it was trying rip its way out and get back to her.

Why can she never see how amazing she is? How can she think that she means nothing to me? How could she think that I cut her out? That’s not even possible! Even though we weren’t talking I was more aware of her than she was. I know was an ass but I love and I never stopped, not even for a second. She’s mine and she always will be.
