December 2018

David glanced out the window briefly, or had he been looking for a long time and was only just zoning back in? At any rate, it was snowing, and Lilith sat beside him as they sat in front of his television.

He was back in some kind of lull state. Normally, he was really good about listening to Lilith, but this time she was asking him something, presumably what to watch, probably a Christmas movie, but he just...couldn't make anything out. If there was anything he wanted to make out, it was-

He felt his cheeks warm.

Lilith was here, and they were spending Christmas together, and- why oh why did he always have to focus on when she would leave? About being sad that he couldn't be with her for as long as either of them wanted? Why couldn't he just exist in the present?

Whether his hands decided to rest innocently or whether they had minds of their own, the sudden sensation of his hand grazing her thigh stopped him cold, and his cheeks grew hotter. If he wasn't able to speak before, he definitely wasn't now. This happened with others, it would happen with Lilith: she would reject him and call him a weirdo and he would lose an umpteenth friend all due to his lack of filter and autism and-

All David could do was swallow.

"It's either The Holiday or the Friends Christmas episodes," She repeated, looking to him, "and if you don't reply, you know what I'll choose."

Her warm voice brought David back to reality. "The Friends Christmas episodes are great, but..."

He swallowed again. "Would you be alright with The Holiday?" David asked, turning his face away in part from nerves and in part to hide him blushing.

She nodded wordlessly and selected the film before sitting back.
"If it's just a plain Christmas Romance ten minutes in, then we're switching to Friends. Christmas is for overeating and nice lights, not drama and romance, I just don't see why films can't appreciate that."

"Well, it's...I remember it being funny. If nothing else, it has Jack Black in it, so it's gonna be a comedy at some point," David said softly, smirking.

But also it was exactly about Christmas romance. If he remembered correctly, the opening sequence was a monologue about unrequited love.

If he remembered correctly, friends to lovers existed in England and in America...just like with Lilith.

How could he possibly tell her he loved her?!

"Well, it's got its ten minutes to make me laugh." Lilith replied, though found herself not minding at all whether it was a comedy or not.
She didn't care what they were watching, as long as they were there, as they were. The time would fly by too fast before she had to leave.

It only took a glance at her phone to remind her she had 16 hours until she would be getting on a plane to go home.

No hours ever felt like enough, she decided, tucking her legs under her and leaning against her friend.

Her eyes were on the TV screen, though she barely even registered any colours.
Sixteen hours, then weeks? Months, likely, before she could return.

Before David could even stop to think what he should do, he instinctively put his arm around the now-leaning-against-him Lilith.

His arm got a little tighter as he realized he wanted more than anything in the world for her to stay.

He leaned a little against her and gently put his other arm on her thigh, slowly.

Lilith was still a moment. Her thoughts had become too numerous that they had all retreated, all but one.

"I don't want to go home."
