"A King?" High Queen Lilith queried as she strode after the Faun.
It was- Dear Aslan, hours before the sun would rise still. She'd only dared take enough time to pull a robe around her nightdress and reach for her crown. Thankfully, her hair was still in a loose side braid, so it wasn't in too much need of a brush. It was hardly the way that a High Queen should present herself, but given the abrupt awakening and the time of night- it was likely that very few people would be about.
Under any other circumstances, a man being brought into the castle gates claiming to be King of Narnia could have at least waited until morning- He was likely just a madman.
But it had only been a month since Peter, Lucy, Edmund and Susan had- not returned.
Of course, it wouldn't be one of them, they'd have been recognised but-Grief is susceptible to any small amount of hope.
"Did he give a name?" She pressed, though they rounded onto the final corridor before the Throne Room.
"He may have, but not that I have been told, Your Majesty."
She pressed her lips together, crossing her arms to keep her robe closed as they reached the large double doors.
"Well," Lilith muttered, mostly to herself as she nodded for the doors to be opened, "I suppose I can ask him for myself."
But she didn't have to ask.
There, arms held by guards, mouth agape, was David.
He mouthed a silent "What?" in disbelief. His eyes widened and his brows furrowed. Was this possible? Could it actually be...
"Lilith..." he said softly.
His breathing turned shaky and his vision blurred as tears welled up in his eyes, and he tried to blink them away since he couldn't wipe them.
He swallowed and took in everything as he stared at her, trying not to cry.
"...I've missed you so much," he said, his voice breaking.
"I-"
She had woken up, hadn't she?
Maybe she shouldn't have expected a madman, maybe she'd finally gone mad.David was- there.
Not... in a crumbling Hall or in a parallel world but- in her home."Let him go." Lilith told the guards, but didn't spare them a glance, blinking back the moisture that filled her eyes.
The past few weeks had been a blur.
She hadn't cried, hadn't felt- hadn't dared to.
But now-Now, her feet seemed to be walking her forward still but she barely managed to voice, "I missed you, too."
As the guards let him go, David fell to his knees in front of her, and he tried to not break down and cry into the floor. He'd rather look up at Lilith anyway.
"I...I never thought I'd see you again...how...I..."
He briefly broke his gaze into her eyes to look around. "Where are we? Is this a dream? Some sort of-...well..."
"Is this really happening?"
"You should recognise your own Throne Room, surely?" But there wasn't as much humour in her voice as she'd hoped. "It's almost identical-"
Was this really happening?
If it was, then-"Leave us." Lilith quickly told the baffled guards, who didn't argue on the matter. She didn't like to cry in front of them and-
She bit back what emotions she could as she knelt in front of the achingly familiar King.
"I- I hope this is really happening..."David tried to steady his breathing to compose himself and mostly failed.
