"So how'd you like meeting David's mum?" Lilith softly asked her mother.

"Suffice it to say that I already never want to have another conversation with her again," Madeline whispered as the others began sitting down, her annoyance and offense clear in her hushed tone. As Madeline walked past David to get to her seat, he couldn't help but stare just a little too long as she walked away, and so forced himself to swallow nothing and look back down.

Do you want me to connect some attraction from her to you?

No, Aphrodite, thank you, I'd rather focus on Lilith anyway.

Would you like to know if Lilith loves you?

David paused.

In a perfect world, yes, immediately, but...I'd rather actually be ABLE to focus on this dinner rather than fantasize.

Aphrodite laughed melodically in his head. Well, I'll at least tell you Lilith doesn't hate you.

David smiled. Normally, his paranoia meant that if there was any other person that Aphrodite offered that information for, it would be genuinely wanted, but Lilith was the one person that David knew didn't hate him. Thank you, Aphrodite, he thought to her as everyone else got to eating, with Madeline throwing David a glance of curiosity.

You are very welcome, my favored, the Goddess replied.

The first few bites and tastes of the meal were meant to grasp how the food portion of the night would be. Even if conversation went sour, they wanted to make sure the food they would eat in the silence that would follow was better.

"So, legitimately, what is it you do for a living? I always forget," David asked Madeline, putting food aside in his mouth. "I might as well ask while I remember to."

"Have you heard of the concept of the multiverse?"

Matt almost set down his fork. "Oh, not this crap-"

"Mum, you don't have to-"

"I mean, I get it, yeah."

The table briefly went silent.

Madeline stared in shock. "You get it?"

"Yeah, it's almost like a...a comic book, I guess," David continued unfazed. "We have our universe, and then there's multiple universes, each like their own zones that act independently of each other, but all are part of a cohesive whole called the multiverse," he said, pausing to chew. "I'm assuming you work to prove as well as anyone can that it's real, right? That's dope, there's a lot of unexplored potential there, that rocks."

"Yeah, if it was real," Matt chimed in. "There's only our universe so far, and God created it."

David very quickly regretted taking that moment to drink water, and Lilith tried not to giggle at his sudden wide-eyed disposition.

"Well, that's exactly what we try to find out," Madeline offered back with a smile.

"Good luck," David replied genuinely. "I hope you guys find something soon."

"If anyone can, it's her," Robert added. "She's done amazing work so far."

"But how can you guys even find that out?" Karen asked. "David's Uncle Doug does a lot of research into theology, tangible research- how can you be so sure there are other universes outside of this one?"

"By doing tangible research, of course." Lilith replied, sending a side smile to her Mum. She hardly found herself listening to her Mum's explanations of her work usually, but Lilith had grown a strong dislike for Karen over the past few years, and she simply couldn't be quiet with such an opportunity in front of her. "Well-funded, highly respected, non-biased, universally recognised- someday- research. There would be far more backing to any of my Mum's arguments supporting the existence of a Multiverse than there would be yours against."
