"We have to hurry

"We have to hurry. Come on." My dad holds out his hand. But as soon as words come out of his mouth, the feeling of betrayal settles back in, and knowing how hard me and my mom worked just to survive after him makes me sick.

"I-I what?? How are... I mean where have you been all this time??" I stutter.

My dad sighs. He seems to have aged a lot since he moved here. "Soren, I know I've screwed up most of my life. I'm selfish and I made bad decisions. You don't have to forgive me but... I just came straight to 1st faction. It was a bad decision, I got roped up into all of this Maverick gambling but when I saw that my daughter had won, I had to find you."

I pause. "You had years to find me. You're only doing it now because I won money? You don't know me at all."

"We really don't have time for this. I'm here to help you, I'm not here for a family reunion. This isn't a proper meeting." He says. "Come on. And the boy as well."

Sunwoo and I glance at each other as we follow him out, closing the door behind us.

My dad leads us down the hall and Sunwoo whispers, "so this is the bitch that ditched you after he won?"

"Yep." I say. "I'm just as shocked as you are."

"Run." My dad says suddenly. I look ahead and there are two guards running at us. "Keep going, down the hall to the left."

"But-"

"Go. Now." He interrupts me. "I'll catch up with you guys."

Oh I've heard that one before.

Sunwoo and I sprint the other way as my dad holds them back.

"Run as fast as that time we raced in the woods." I say to him.

"Are you kidding? I'm so speedy." Sunwoo says. "Call me Run-woo."

I nearly laugh when suddenly we hear the loading of a gun.

We both freeze as three guards surround us, and the council members walk behind them.

"Very clever." One of the men says. "Take them to the cellar, don't be afraid to use force."

"Halt." A sharp voice silences all the men in suits and the guards. Everyone turns around to see the one woman who was in the room earlier.

"What is it, Ms. Shay?" the man asks with frustration.

"This isn't right." She says firmly. "Allow them to go, and take those handcuffs off."

The guards reach for our wrists but the man holds his hand. "It's always something with her. Don't listen to her, take them away."

"Stop." She orders. The guards freeze in confusion. "Stop acting like we aren't a team on this. We run this together. And you don't always get the final say."
