[19] TRAINING

TRAINING

"Are you sure about this?"

"I'll protect her if it goes too far." Wanda reassures.

"Alright. Here goes nothing."

"Are you ready kiddo?"

"I think so?" Vanessa says, unsure on how to feel.

You got this. She tells herself, closing her eyes.

Exchanging glances, the team gets into position, all attacking at the same time.

Vanessa opens her eyes, hands shooting out left and right, up and down as she creates small energy barriers wherever it is required.

Some of them come close.

Seeing how she is standing her ground, the rest of the team steps in.

The girl turns around in a circle, continuing with the motion as she tries to locate each one, but all the lights, sounds, and the background start blurring together.

Her breathing increases as she begins to panic, creating a force field of light all around.

Taking in a deep breath, she gets up and raises her hands like she did that day she was with Peter.

This time the force field is visible, glowing with a bright blue hue.

Vanessa grunts with the effort.

Her knees buckle, but she puts more pressure on her legs to keep her from falling.

"All right, that's enough!" Steve shouts. "Vanessa, are you alright?"

"I can do this." She says, the force field coming down as she lowers her arms.

She falls on her knees with exhaustion.

"Not bad kiddo." Tony says, but Vanessa shakes her head.

"It's not good enough."

"Don't be so hard on yourself, take it one step at a time."

"You're right, sorry." She says.

"You're alright. Let's take a break everyone."

Vanessa sighs as she sits on the bench, staring at her hands.

"What's on your mind?" Wanda asks, sitting next to her.

"I can't seem to manage to activate my abilities on command."

"It seems like I can only use them as defense or whenever I'm in danger."

Wanda nods in in understanding.

"Give me your hand." She says.

Raising a brow, Vanessa lifts her hand, watching in amazement as the light blue light mixes in with Wanda's red one.

"How do you do that Wands?"

"Your new abilities are part of you, they have always been there, buried deep down. Stop treating them like something that needs to be activated. Focus on what you feel and let your body follow."

Throughout the day, the team gives her different tips that have helped them.

Vanessa makes sure to write them down.

Bruce and Wanda are especially helpful.

Late at night, Vanessa lays awake and thinks about it.

But it doesn't do her much good.

Sighing, she sits up, folding her knees into a crisscrossed position, resting her hands in her knees the way Bruce suggested for her to do.

Focus on what you feel.

Taking a deep breath, she closes her eyes and focuses, but nothing happens.

It's okay. Try again.

Shutting her eyes tight, she pictures the glow in her hands again, sighing when there is no change.

"I don't get it." She mutters. "What am I doing wrong?"

I need to learn to use my abilities as soon as possible. The sooner I have control, the more I'll be prepared to help when the time comes.

"Hey Loki? If you can hear me, I could really use your help."

As she fidgets with her ring, it falls and lands on the soft carpet, sending a spark.

Frowning, she picks it up, bringing it closer as it glows.

When she touches it, it sparks again.

Pushing her hair behind her ears, the girl sits back on her bed, holding the ring on the palm of her hand.

"Just feel." She says. "Let it do its thing."

Relaxing her body, she closes her eyes and focuses again, smiling when the inside of the ring glows.

Little by little, her palms begin to glow.

When she manages to hold the feeling for a few seconds, she moves on to the next step.

Now that she can summon the glow, she passes it from hand to the other, forming an orb, the ring at the center expanding until it becomes a sphere.

The girl smiles as the sphere rotates, the energy surrounding it becoming bigger and then smaller with the movement of her hands before it completely disappears.

"It worked!" She says in disbelief, smiling to herself.

Now all she needs to do is master it so that she can use it in her training.

Sighing in contentment, she lays back on her bed, satisfied with the day's progress.

Tomorrow is another day, but at least for now, she can rest knowing that she is on her way there.
