After taking a few deep breaths to reel her emotions back in, Kaida stood and walked to the tent's entrance, immediately feeling better when the sun hit her face. She stood there for a moment with her eyes closed, soaking in the sun's warmth.

"What are you doing?"

Kaida jumped at the sound of someone's voice coming from next to her. Her head whipped to the side, but it wasn't until she looked down that she finally saw Sokka there, staring up at her with a brow raised and a bored expression on his face. "Uh... I don't know, the sun just feels nice." She answered with a shrug as the boy stood, looking at her with his eyes narrowed. "The sun is a firebender's best friend, so it's only natural that I-" She started to explain, but Kaida was cut off by a gloved hand slapping over her mouth.

Sokka looked around to make sure no one was watching before he pulled her off to the side of the tent. Kaida shoved his hand away from her mouth, sending him a glare that he didn't hesitate to return. "You can't tell anyone you're a firebender!" He whispered harshly.

Kaida furrowed her brows, feeling offended. "Excuse me?! Why not?"

"No one knows that you are, and I'd like to keep it that way. We've gone through enough from you people, and I don't need my village getting worried." He explained, standing back up straight with his arms crossed over his chest. "But, if you make one wrong move, one slip up, give me one reason to think you might hurt Katara or anyone else in the village, and you won't have to worry about that wound taking you out. It wouldn't have enough time. Understood?"

Kaida stared up at him, masking her surprise beneath a challenging glare. She didn't want these people to think she was a threat, but she also didn't appreciate being threatened herself either. "Understood." She replied through clenched teeth.

Sokka searched her eyes for a moment, waiting to see for any change, before nodding. "Good. And to make sure you don't try anything, you need to stay in my line of sight at all times. Got it?"

"Got it." Kaida replied, crossing her own arms over her chest, only to wince at the action.

Sokka glanced down at where the wound was hidden under her parka. "How did someone from the Fire Nation get a burn like that?"

Kaida rose a brow. "Just because we're from the Fire Nation, doesn't mean we're fireproof. It's actually more common than you'd think." She informed sassily. "But in my case, my commander tried to execute me."

It was Sokka's turn to raise a brow. "What? Why? What did you do?"

"Women aren't allowed in the Fire Nation military, and he found out I'm a girl." She shrugged. "I knew it was either that or banishment if anyone ever found out, but I more of expected the latter."

Sokka scoffed. "Of course women aren't allowed in their military! You'd only slow them down."

Kaida narrowed her eyes into a glare. "I'll have you know I was the top ranked trainee in my squadron, and I climbed that ladder faster than any new recruits ever had."

Sokka shrugged. "Sure." He said sarcastically with a smirk. Before Kaida could argue any further, the Water Tribe boy walked off, saying something about having a class to teach.

Kaida was left with her aggravation and anger, but the feelings quickly were replaced with anxiety as her thoughts swirled with everything she'd just heard said about her nation. They've attacked the southern tribe already? How long were they in that iceberg? It couldn't have been any longer than a few weeks at most...

But as she looked around, Kaida realized there were no recognizable faces. In fact, the whole place wasn't how she remembered it at all. The strong walls of ice were now replaced by a crudely made snow pile surrounding the few tents that made up the village. And where were all the men?
