BREAKFAST WAS QUIET for the most part. Louis sat on one side of the long dining table, Kieran and Dane on opposite ends.

Every once in a while, Dane would speak, asking one of his nephews a question, but then he would go back to signing papers, or writing people back.

Louis gestured for one of the maids to take his plate, to which they moved from their spot by the door to grab it. Kieran leaned back against the dining table chair, examining the large room. He questioned why everything was candle lit, when there were perfectly operable electrical lights everywhere.

That's just how Dane was. He liked the old fashioned, he liked the traditional. It got exhausting sometimes. But it was Dane's house, or his brothers house, but now it was his.

Kieran glanced down at the watch on his wrist slightly, and could immediately feel eyes on him. "Going somewhere?" Dane asks, looking up from the paper he was reading.

It wasn't accusatory, but it always felt like it was coming from him. "Can I not check the time?" Kieran responds.

Dane shrugs innocently. "I was just asking a question."

Kieran clenched his jaw. His uncle was really good at pushing his buttons, whether or not that was really his initial intent.

Louis glances at the two of them, before speaking. "Any word from The Guild?" He asks, wiping his hands with the black cloth and tossing it back on the table.

Dane shook his head, putting the papers down. "It'll be a while before they can identify the girls." He says. "All we can do now is keep tabs, and make sure we're doing as we're told." He says.

Kieran wasn't looking, but he was sure both of them looked in his direction when he said that.

"How long is a while?" Louis asks. "The longer it takes the stronger they'll get."

"And thankfully the two of you know how to deal with them if they become problems." Dane says, turning to Louis with the subtle sternness. It was enough to get Louis to stop prying. Dane took a breath, his eyes going back to the paper in his hands. "I give it a few days, at most."

Kieran and Louis exchange pointed glances. "And then The Guild will come here? To Southeil?" Kieran asks.

Dane sighs. "Let's hope that won't be necessary."

Her feet were bruised, dried blood painted her toenails where old bandaids dangled off. Sloane sat against a wall, earbuds in her ears as she bent and broke her new pointe shoes. Her legs were crossed, soft pink tights with grey leg warmers, a grey sweater over her black leotard.
