Alora obviously didn't get a normal childhood and a lot of her issues now stemmed from that. Like her longing to be "normal" or to fit in. She missed out on things everyone her age had gotten. She never got an education or friends. The things she learned, she got from the TV and books. All of those high school movies and coming-of-age shows; she wanted that. So, when she saw Silver show up with her prom things, she was in shock. It was backless, a sparkly light blue, with a slit at the top of her thigh. The dress flowed around her ankles but didn't quite touch the floor. She had gotten small silver heels to go with it. Everything was breathtaking.
So far, everything had gone according to plan. Alora had stayed over at Finlay's house to get ready for prom since she didn't want Robby to see her dress before the dance. Also because his mom, Shannon, was back in town and imagine her surprise when she walked in to see Robby and Alora curled up on her couch. That was one awkward conversation.
Robby was supposed to pick her up at 8 and it was currently 6:30 and she was nowhere near ready. For God's sake, she was still running around in her PJs. Penelope, Finlay's mom, was trying to finish her hair.
"Stop moving, you're going to get burned," Penelope said as she took the curling iron away from Alora's head. Something else that she learned was that Penelope's accent was a lot stronger than Finlay's which made sense, however, it did make it harder to understand her.
"Sorry," she apologized and sat still. She would never admit it out loud but she was kind of nervous. She couldn't stop thinking about Robby and Tory even though Robby had assured her multiple times that he didn't like her. What if he just decided that he did like her? What if he left her for Tory? What if-
"You're doing it again," Penelope said, lightly tapping her with a comb.
"Doing what?" Alora asked, innocently.
"Overthinking," Penelope responded with a knowing look. "Now, if that lad loves you as much as you love him, there's no need to worry."
"That's my issue," Alora groaned. "I don't know if he does."
"You are amazing, mo luaidh." Alora had no idea what that meant but she assumed it was an endearing term as she used it a lot with both her and Finlay. "If he cannot see that then he is a dobber."
Alora took a deep breath and nodded. "You're right. I'm awesome with or without him." A moment later, she added, "But preferably I'd like to stay awesome with him."
Penelope just laughed and ushered the girl upstairs, "Now, let's go get your dress and makeup on." Penelope often insisted that Alora was like the daughter she never had and she acted like Alora's maternal figure. It meant a lot and was quite literally doing wonders in healing her inner child.
Penelope helped her put on her dress with minimum struggle and fanned her eyes, trying to keep her tears at bay. She did Alora's makeup and once she was finished, Alora stood up and stared at herself in the full-body mirror.
"I look...hot," Alora grinned at the mirror.
"Hell yeah," Penelope added, making Alora laugh.
They walk down to see Leo, Finlay's dad, fixing Finlay's tie. Finlay looks up and his jaw drops.
"I know right," she nodded, flipping her hair. "But don't get used to it. You'll probably never see me this put together again."
"Robby's gonna lose his mind," Finlay said in approval. Right after the words left his mouth, the doorbell rang. Alora looked at the watch on her wrist.
"Shit. Why is he early? I don't even have my shoes on," Alora said, rushing back upstairs to get her shoes.
"Uh, so should I get the door?" Leo asked, looking a little lost. Finlay went and opened the door to see Robby standing outside with a small black box in his hands.
