Chapter 20

2 months later

Daryls pov

"Penny stop runnin off." I shouted pullin her arm back but the girl pulled away. She bent down cupping the wild flowers growing. She blew some petals out of her hand and chuckled. I kept a watch for walkers as I hung back away from her. I was meant to be huntin and she really wanted to come too. I couldn't say no to her which pissed me off. Penny was like me, we hated being caged in that place. She skipped and started to triwl, her braids nearly whipped me in the face.
"Stop that! Get your ass movin."
"K daddy dixon."
"Shut up!" I growled trudgin forwards. I hated the girl, but I liked her too.I hated her cos she reminded me of Lily so much; cute little smile, same hippie attitude towards life. I guess it was a constant reminder, 'karma' for not savin her.
"Come on, just let me hunt." I mumbled. She huffed and followed close to my heel, like a dog followin it's master.
"I find a walker let me shoot it, got it?" I snapped and she nodded. A walker came out of the bushes. I held up my crossbow ready to shoot but it fell before i got the chance. Penny had shot it and the gun shot rang, sending birds flyin'.
"What the hell?" I shouted pushing her back into a near by tree. Her little face was scrunched up and angry, she pushed me away hard.
"You never let me shoot!"
"Yeah not with a gun that doesn't have a silencer on it! God they're gonna be all on our assess." I kicked the dirt my breathin heavy and my jaw clamped shut. She played with her hair and began to pout her face, crystal blue eyes watering.
"I just wanted to shoot one." she whispered.
"Well you could of got us killed. Lily told me to look after you, you're a walkin disaster that got her killed too." the words escaped from my mouth and a pang of guilt slapped me around the face.
She stood there and tears burst from her fiery blue eyes, she looked too much like her.
"I didn't mean that..."
"Yes you did or you wouldn't of said it. I thought you were my friend but I guess I was wrong, god I'm so stupid it is all my fault." she darted and took off running, sprinting over logs and blue bells.
"Penny!" I shouted taking after her. I caught a glimpse of her dirty blonde hair and head quickly. I was pumping my legs till they hurt as I tried to sprint after her but she was gone. I span around in circles, I placed my hands in my hair and tugged tightly. I heared a blood curdling scream and i felt my blood run cold.
"Penny!" I shouted louder and it echoed across the forest.

I ran for about an hour trying to find her. I'm gonna have to tell Rick and Maggie. Shit.
The one promise Lily had made I had broken, god it hurt.
Rick was already at the gate by the time i had arrived back.
"What happened? We heard a scream?" I swallowed and looked back up itchin my stubble.
"I said somethin...she took off runnin. I followed her but I lost her and I heard the scream. I tried to find her but she had disappeared."
"Shit, nothing?" Rick ran his fingers through his hair and I could see the panic in his eyes. The only shot of finding this cure was gone.
"Where's Penny?" Maggie came running forward, brown hair falling loosely around her face.
"I lost her." I mumbled looking down at the ground. Maggie was like Penny's mum this was gonna hurt a lot to her.
"You lost her? You lost her!" She snapped and she looked like she was gonna bite my head off.
"She took off."
"What? How? Why would she ever do that?" Her voice was sharp as she started grabbing her hair like i did earlier.
"I said some shit..."
"Like what?"
"I said she was dangerous and got Lily killed."
"Why on earth would you say that?" Maggie snapped and pushed me back. No one had touched or looked at me like that since Lily died. They were too afraid too. Maggie had balls.
"Cos it's true!" i pointed my finger in her face and she scrunched up her nose.
"Hey we need to find her before somethin happens, so let's go," Rick held up his hand and i nodded. Maggie and Glen agreed to stay behind to look after Judith while the rest of set off .

We spent days searching. We were about to give up until we decided to search a little further, away from the forest. We were surprised when we came across a big ass gate. There looked like there was a whole city built behind them. Men in uniforms came out with big imposing guns pointin them at us.
"Weapons on the floor now!" They barked at us.
"We're just looking for a little girl." Rick held up his hand. The soldiers were obviously on a balcony or somethin as their heads peered over the gate.
"Weapons on the ground now!" They ordered again. Rick looked at us all and he reluctantly put his weapons on the ground.

"Rick." Michoone raised her brow at him but he didn't reply. Two guards came out grabbed our weapons and took us inside the grounds, pavements and buildings just like Woodbury.
"Got some civilians" a soldier spoke into the walkie talkie.
"Get back." one of his buddies said to the advancing crowd lookin at us if were animals in a zoo. The person he was talking to darted out the way and headed towards us.
"Penny." I heard Ricks voice ask. Her eyes flickered to mine and her smile winded.
"Daryl!" She screamed with happiness and pratically jumped into my arms. I wrapped my arms around her, the kid was like a stick.
"I said get on the ground." the soldier came up as I placed her on the ground and she didn't hide behind my leg like she used to do.
"I know them and they aren't a threat, take them to Jenna." Penny stepped forward and glared at the guard. I recognised the name, Lily's sister.
"You, come with me." the man grabbed me and Penny started to scream and shout, obviously something bad was gonna happen i was sure of it.I was waiting for someone to kill me, at least i would be with Lily then.
Penny was picked up and carried away. The man pushed me hard into a room. I pounded on the door he closed and then kicked it. I turned around and saw someone's back was facing me. Slowly they turned around.
1 beady eye. One green.
Hair a gorgeous gold blonde. Small body, pale as lead.
I stood still, not certain what to do...
