Chapter Text:
To say he was just envious wouldn’t even describe half of the feelings Dream was experiencing. Hell, he didn’t even know what he was feeling at the moment, but all he knew was that it was something bad. Something that he needed to cut off of him. But could he?
Dream knew he was envious of the children of the server, which would be confusing out of context. And of course it would be, out of context; Dream never shared his past with anyone, ashamed and afraid that his vulnerabilities would make him look weak. But why would someone even be envious of a child when they were literally an adult? Didn’t being an adult mean that he got to experience more of life, rid of all the limitations of childhood? He would argue quite the opposite.
He bit his lip as he thought to himself. Being an adult wasn’t a gift to him, it was a prison. Being an adult meant that he couldn’t live his life carefree and oblivious to the real world and its horrors. Dream wanted to be able to do anything he wanted, commit crimes and not have to take the blame for it. Mistakes didn’t exist in his world, because everyone else saw him as a monster, something that didn’t deserve to be human with all their flaws.
But that wasn’t just it, it was also his nonexistent childhood. He matured too fast, he was exposed to the world’s hatred at a young age. Dream never asked for his mother to die when he was only 6 years old, leaving him alone with his father to fend for himself.
His father was abusive and an alcoholic, taking out all his anger onto his own child and blaming the small boy for the death of his mother. Dream still had scars from all the beatings and broken bottles that were thrown at him; countless marks littering his body from being subjected to his father’s physical abuse for 8 whole years. The only way he was able to escape that hell was because his father drank himself to death.
He was 14 when he was released from his father’s hold. He was 14 when he was taken in by an older couple in a village he was wandering through, not having anywhere to go back to. Dream would wonder if this new foster family of his was what happiness felt like, it felt like it, especially because they didn’t hit him like his father did.
The blonde managed to live 2 years in peace before all hell broke loose again when an army of Illagers raided his village. He could vaguely remember getting thrown out of the way from a charging Ravager, blood splattering onto him as his foster mother was trampled underneath the mob. He could barely remember his foster father, who had managed to run out of the house with him, only to be tossed into the fangs of an Evoker’s magic.
He was doused with his foster parent’s blood that day as he ran as far away as he could into the forest, away from the village as the Illagers slaughtered every villager they could get their hands on. Dream ran away until his legs gave out and he collapsed onto the ground.
When he woke up the next morning, all he did was cry until he realized that his throat was parched and in desperate need of water. He quenched his thirst at a nearby river, convincing himself that he didn’t need anyone anymore before he set out to travel to the nearby village his foster parents would sometimes visit.
Ever since then, Dream learned how to survive on his own, how to pickpocket and steal just so he could have food for that day. He managed to survive on his own for 2 whole years before he was met with the same situation he had experienced years ago when he still had a family. The village he was scrounging in was being raided and Dream knew better than to stay and get himself killed.
