Oh no. Mudwing soldiers? Will they attack us? Capture us?
"Someone's coming," Starling whispered, "quick! Hide!"
Mango camouflaged into her surroundings and Starling frantically looked around for a place to hide. But it was too late...
"Halt!" a voice ordered.
Two Mudwings emerged from the brush holding spears. The first was such dark brown he almost looked black. He was muscular, and covered in scars with a bad underbite. The second was greenish brown, slightly taller than her partner.
"Who are you?" the first one questioned, "what are you doing so close to the city? Are you here to steal something? Kill someone?"
What? No! Why would I ever do that!?
"Calm down, Alder," the second spoke in a smooth voice, "he's just a dragonet. No older than five. He's probably just lost."
The green Mudwing stepped towards Starling, examining him.
"Apologies for my brother," she spoke, "my name is Sorrel. And his name is Alder." She gestured to the black-brown dragon behind her with her wing.
"Starling," Starling said, "my name is Starling."
Alder approached, circling Starling.
"This is no Mudwing," he grumbled, "it's a Skywing in disguise!"
"There are brown Skywings, Alder," Sorrel said, "it's really just orange. But so dark it looks brown. But now that you mention it... seeing a Skywing sure is peculiar." Sorrel leaned in closer, examining his face. "Skywing... where has your tribe been?"
"What do you mean?" Starling questioned, "my tribe has been in the mountains! The Sky Kingdom!"
"Nobody's heard from the Skywings in days," Alder growled, "our trade routes have gone silent. Queen Moorhen sent a diplomat over to check on them but he didn't come back. We- I think... the Skywings killed him."
"Or something has happened to the Skywings," Sorrel added, "but now one is here. In the Mud Kingdom. So this is peculiar. Where have you been? And where is our diplomat?"
"I don't know!" Starling insisted, "the truth is... I was raised by Rainwings. I've never been to the Sky Kingdom before!"
Alder gave Starling a skeptical look.
"You are very peculiar," Sorrel said, "how did a Skywing egg end up in the rainforest?"
Sorrel's pale green eyes were filled with intense interest and curiosity. Her expression had a wonderful sincerity to it.
"I don't know!" Starling exclaimed, "thats why we- I am going to the Sky Kingdom."
"Interesting..." Sorrel spoke.
"Hmm," Alder grumbled, "I don't trust it. Seems like a scheme to gain our trust."
"Well if it is..." Sorrel said, "it sure has worked on me. Come on, Alder. Let's go."
"Fine," Alder grumbled, turning to follow his sister.
Sorrel stopped, turning back to meet Starling's gaze.
"Good luck, little Skywing," Sorrel said, "find your tribe. Save them. I believe in you."
Starling nodded and the two Mudwings left.
Mango appeared beside him, a strange concerned look on her face.
"Did they say the Skywings are missing?" she questioned, "wow... this mystery is way bigger than I thought."
Starling curled up on the damp ground, feeling tired and confused. Mango lay'd down beside him, bits of purple showing through her orangey brown disguise.
"At first I thought we were just looking for your parents," Mango said, "but now we might have to find your whole tribe! This is crazy."
Starling wanted to reply, but he was so exhausted all he could do was close his drowsy eyes, and drift off to sleep.
