Epilogue: New Beginnings
"Love doesn't need to be Perfect. It just needs to be True."
- Buddha
Eight years later...
Ding dong!
Stepping toward the door, Maggie drew it open, peeking her head outside.
"Hi!" She smiled.
"Good evening, ma'am!" A young teenage boy in a blue uniform greeted, his face covered with freckles. He then handing her two large boxes. "Here are your pizzas."
"Thanks." Taking out her wallet, Maggie thumbed through its contents, then took out some twenties, handing it to him. "Keep the change."
"Thanks, lady." As he was about to turn away, the teenager suddenly paused. "Uhh, sorry, but...have I seen you somewhere before?"
Maggie smiled. "Afraid not." She then shrugged. "I just have one of those faces, I guess."
The pizza driver thought it over, then nonchalantly shrugged. "Okay. Have a good night, ma'am."
"You too."
Closing the door behind her, Maggie locked it, then turned around with the pizza boxes in hand.
"Dillon, the pizzas are here!" She called as she made her way to the kitchen.
"Coming Mom!" She heard the young voice call back from the den.
Hearing tiny footsteps quickly approaching, Maggie watched as the boy eagerly bounded from around the corner like an excited puppy, his auburn hair matching hers.
"Wow, that smells delicious!" He smiled.
Maggie smiled back. "Yeah, it does, huh? Go wash your hands and get the plates out, alright?"
"Okay, Mom."
The former celebrity felt her heart skip a beat as she watched the little rascal scamper off.
It had been eight years since she had left the spotlight. Eight years since she had attended a movie premier, signed an autograph, done an interview, or spoke at a news conference.
Hell, she hadn't even touched a bottle of booze in ages.
No longer was she Queen Maeve, Empress of the Netherworld and celebrated figurehead for the LGTBQ Community. No longer was she either a superhero or a superstar; nowadays, nobody ever really took notice.
Granted, she might get the odd look now and then when she goes shopping, but as far as everyone in the small town of Arkham was concerned, she was Maggie Lake, a quiet suburban mom with an eight-year-old son from New York who was hoping to find some peace and quiet.
