“I know what your kind did to mine. I know” Shani whispered in Zachery’s face before turning and running of into the woods. No one said anything for a few moments before Luke sighed and ran a hand through his hair.

“I guess I’ll go and make sure she doesn’t destroy the woods.” He turned and took off in the same direction as Shani went. Sighing, I bent down and picked up the broken piece of technology. Blood was smeared in the grooves and pieces were scattered around. Making sure I picked up all of the smashed pieces, I got up and decided to burn them in the small fire someone had started. Watching the paint bubble and melt, I heard someone come up behind me.

“She didn’t mean any of that you know.” I whispered. Zachery didn’t say anything, but just stood next to me and watched the fire. Zachery wasn’t anything Shani said before. He wasn’t a monster. He wasn’t responsible for the fire and he sure as hell wasn’t one of those. One of those would have gone back when they had the chance to. And I recall Zachery stayed and saved me.

Moving away from the fire, I headed over to the infirmary. Children and young teens were sitting along the wall being treated with burns and cuts by a group of girls younger than me. It was almost sad to see.

Making myself useful and to keep my mind of things, I grabbed a wet rag and started cleaning a young boy with long angry marks on his arm. After removing a layer of soot and ash, I wrapped the burn in a cold wet rag. The little boys eyes flitted closed but his lips whispered a ‘thankyou’.

Smiling down at the boy, I made sure he was comfortable before leaving him and moving to the next child. The little girl had black ash in her blonde hair and her blue eyes were wide in fright.

“You like the alien.” She asked me as I started gently wiping her face. I smiled and nodded. She seemed puzzled at my answer. When her face was clean, I started dressing her leg which looked like they were pelted with small sharp rocks.

I was imminently angry. These were marks of the 56 Block. The skin around the small red marks was inflamed and from the small gasps of pain emitting from the girls lips, very tender and sore. If she was shot at close range the bullets would have gone straight through the girls leg, so this must have been done at a great distance. I could still see small flakes of the bullet embedded in her leg.

“Why?” the girl asked. “Why do you like one of the aliens?”

Kneeling down next to the girl, I looked into her blue eyes. Eyes that were full of fear and pain.

“They’re exactly the same as you or me.” I said, pointing my finger to the both of us.

“No they’re not. They came from space. We came from the land. They destroyed everything.” She said defensively and I smiled at her stubbornness, finding a bit of Shani in her.

“Can I ask you something?” I asked, trying to go in from a different perspective. The girl nodded and tried to sit up. Helping her into a sitting position and placing her leg on my knee I cleared my throat.

“Do you feel happiness?” I asked.

“Sometimes.”

“But you feel it right?” the girl nodded. “Do you feel warm? Do you feel safe?” More nods.
