It was unsure why my first reaction to ‘them’ was other than ‘more humans’. I really couldn’t believe that there we hundreds of humans living in the world, undetected. Well, until Zachery’s father came along and found out. I went from being down to one left, to a small camp to an entire world below our noses.

Well, at least I found out why I couldn’t go past the boundaries.

I stood next to Shani who had come back, slightly limping but better than when she had left. Her fists were clenched at her sides and her whole body was tense. Luke seemed to be calmer about the whole matter. He lightly gripped a long pointy stick which I had come to know as a spear and his eyes searched the area but we already knew where they were.

Kelly was helping all the children into the medic hut and Scarlet was almost growling into the bushes and I was left feeling strange and out of place. It seemed as if everyone knew who was out there except for me and Zachery. Zachery was standing next to me and his eyes roamed over the forest trying to see what everyone else saw.

A rustling in the bushes had us on high alert. No one said a word and I don’t think I breathed as we all waited for something to happen.

“Shani, do you really think this is a proper greeting?”

“Zane.” Shani growled into the bushes. An older man, about Arson’s age walked out and I think my jaw dropped. Not because he was hot, but ok. He was hot but that wasn’t why I was gasping at him. The man was good for his age. Toned stomach and a good about of muscle on his torso. I knew this because he was only wearing a pair of shorts that needed to be burned. His skin was a golden tan and a mop of brown hair was combed over his ears. Designs that looked like hand prints were painted along his rib cage and up to his neck. Feathers were sticking up from his hair and dirt clung to him.

“No harm from us, Shani.” Zane said, holding his hands up. I noticed a belt made of animal skin hung on his hips and a long carved blade gleamed in a pocket that was sewn into the side of the animal skin.

“What do you want?” Shani snapped, holding out her spear in the direction of Zane.

“Just a chat. Adrian wants to talk.” Shani growled, a low noise in the back of her throat.

“Why would she want to talk to him?” Luke interjected, holding another spear in Zane’s direction.

“She doesn’t have too, but Adrian does.” Zane’s eyes searched the camp and when his eyes swept over me, I felt violated. Like he just saw me from the inside and out. His eyes landed on Zachery and his face turned up in disgust.

“Well I’m not talking to him about anything,” Shani spat and I wondered why she didn’t want to talk to this Adrian guy. Zane just smiled and looked smug.

“Now we can do this the easy way or the hard way Shani,” and after he said that, I heard the clicking in the surrounding forest. I noticed so many pairs of eyes and the light reflecting of weapons it made my stomach drop. There were so many out there, all waiting for that one command to kill us.

“What does he want to talk about?” Shani asked and I knew she was going to go. We were outnumbered and most of us were injured.

“I don’t know. I was just sent here to collect you.” Zane said and he slowly walked backwards to the forest.
