imagine: in the fall after you and steve spent the summer hooking up at his parents' house, you admit you two actually love each other after dustin helps him realize how stupid he's been.
it had been a wild summer full of passion, late nights, and good sex. who in the small town of hawkins, indiana did sex so good? steve harrington. he knew every move to make, every place to skim across your body, every word to say, every curve to trace. He was immaculate. it had all begun when the two of you had been messing around at a party and had accidentally kissed. it escalated and you woke up in his bed the next morning.
for the rest of the summer, you two hooked up practically every night with you sneaking in through his garden gate and him holding you each night. so you were inseparable. parties, late night drives, dinner, hanging out, whatever it was you were together. but you'd told him it didn't have to be serious, which made him think you didn't want it to be serious. so the summer fling began and you were devastated by it all. but you'd never tell him that.
october came swiftly and you two still saw one another frequently. your brother, dustin henderson mentioned something about it not too long after halloween night. you'd shaken him off saying you and Steve were just friends. he may have been twelve but he knew more than he let on.
so as dustin and steve walked along the railroad tracks laying down a plan for the demodog as dustin called it, dustin interrogated steve about the situation at hand.
"so how long have you been fucking my sister?" dustin asked.
"excuse me?" steve asked.
"i'm not stupid, steve," dustin raised an eyebrow but kept walking.
"just because we hang out you assume we're hooking up?" steve asked.
"fucking," dustin corrected, "and yes."
"bullshit," he laughed and dustin rolled his eyes.
"so let me get this straight: you two have been fooling around for months and you won't make a move on her?" dustin asked him.
"she wouldn't appreciate me making a move, even if i wanted to," Steve replied. "we agreed to keep it casual, no rules, no strings attached."
"by your request?" dustin asked.
"her's," he said, "she wanted informality and so i've complied."
"so you want that too?" dustin asked.
"i don't know," steve sighed, "for a middle schooler you ask a lot of questions."
"i want answers," dustin shot back. "so you're losing my sister because you're respecting her wishes?"
"do you know something i don't, henderson?" steve asked, stopping on the tracks.
"that's not what i said," dustin smirked.
"you know something, don't you?" steve crossed his arms.
"i don't know anything," dustin began to walk along the tracks again and steve followed behind quickly. "except that you're being an idiot."
"oh because a portal to another dimension opened in our small town and i'm gonna lose her if i don't admit that i've loved her since i laid eyes on her?" steve blurted out and stopped as dustin turned around to face him.
"i knew it," dustin grinned and steve rolled his eyes.
"fine, i might have a small thing for your sister," steve admitted.
"then tell her," dustin said.
a little while later, steve and i were reunited in hawkins lab as i was running down the hallway and out of the building. he bumped into me in the hallway as the lights flickered on and off quickly around us. i looked into his brown eyes and began to cry as i held onto him. he cried too and then we joined hands and ran out the front doors of the lab. not too long after, we were sitting silently in his car while the kids were outside of the car talking.
then he said, "hey (y/n)...i...uh, have to say something."
"i have to say something too," i said.
"let's say it at the same time," steve said.
"1..." he said.
"2..." i said.
"3!" we said together, "i'm in love with you!"
we stared at each other for a second then started laughing. the moment was ridiculously cheesy and we both knew it. we continued to laugh until our eyes caught again.
"i'm sorry i said informal," i said, "i just didn't want you to feel tied down."
"i never would have," he replied, "i've loved you since i saw you and i've known that all along. i love you so much i was willing to lose you over informality."
"i'm glad you didn't," i smiled and pulled him into a kiss.
