imagine: your psycho ex, billy, comes over to try and find his little sister, max, but when he sees you he tries to get you back in an aggressive manner. your new boyfriend, steve, steps in when billy tries to attack you.
i had been in a dedicated relationship with billy hargrove for about a year and a half when i broke up with him. i thought he was crazy and i couldn't be with someone who got violent when we would fight. frankly, he scared me. so i distanced myself and i met the greatest man i have ever known and my boyfriend, steve harrington.
we had met when i had tripped in the hallway and he'd caught me. it was cheesy, but after that moment we were absolutely inseparable. you two had been together when you'd discovered the upside down and the theories about the mind flayer from a bunch of middle schoolers. one of them was max mayfield, billy's stepsister. i adored her and she was the one thing about that breakup that i missed.
after you'd found out about the upside down and the monsters in it that were terrorizing hawkins, jonathan, will, their mother joyce, and nancy, had all left to go get the mind flayer, which was occupying will, out. eleven and hopper went to hawkins lab to close the gate once and for all. that left steve and i in charge of babysitting the middle schoolers: mike, dustin, lucas, and max. we sat around in the house, waiting for everything to be over. the kids were griping about having to be stuck there and not out helping eleven.
steve stepped into the kitchen with me and we stood inches from one another hearing the kids bickering in the background. his eyes were on me as he raised his hand and moved a piece of hair out of my eyes.
"you know," he said, "i wish i'd met you sooner."
"we both know that it wouldn't have even been possible," i replied as i played with the strings on his hoodie, "i hate a douchebag boyfriend. no matter how charming you'd been i wouldn't have been able to-"
"i know that," he replied, "i just can't believe the world ending is our circumstance."
"it's going to be fine, steve," i reassured him although i wasn't too sure of it myself.
"if we make it out of here-" he began.
"when," i corrected.
"when we make it out of here," he smiled and began again, resting his hands in my hands, "i want to take you out. like really take you out."
"steve-" i began to defend him.
"no," he shook his head gently, "i haven't even taken you out on one serious date. i'm a bad boyfriend."
"no, you're not," i replied, turning his head to face me, "you're the greatest person i've ever met. that's why i'm in love with you."
"you're in love with me?" he asked, cracked a smile.
we hadn't said i love you at that point, but i was sure of my conviction that i was in love with him. with billy, i hadn't been when i'd said it and i don't think i fully believed it, which did both of us a disservice.
