imagine: steve has had a crush on you since you were kids and when your brother gets infected by the mind flayer and blames you before almost killing you, steve takes the opportunity to admit his feelings and support you through it.

you had always been close to your brother despite the flaws of your family. born and raised in hawkins, indiana, you both had always gone through school there and had friends through one another and tradition alike. one of those friends was steve harrington. you had viewed steve as one of your brother's friends for years. he had talked to you only a handful of times, and yet you felt your feelings for him grow every time your eyes caught his in crowded rooms and in ones where it was just the two of you. but you knew better than to ever act on something like that.

in the summer of 1985 just before your senior year of high school, your brother had been out late one night with his girlfriend, heather holloway. when he had come home, he had been acting extremely weird. when you'd finally confronted him about it, he started screaming and blaming you for what was happening to him. for the darkness inside. he blamed you for the trauma your parents' divorce had left on him. he blamed you for being the reason he couldn't leave that stupid town. you'd begun crying as he grabbed a lamp a began to throw it at you. you ran up the stairs and he followed you, continuing to throw things at you. you ran into your bedroom, locking the door behind you.

you felt yourself slide down the door as you cried. you found the strength to go to your phone as you heard the front door slam, knowing it had to be your brother. you dialed the only number you knew to dial. steve's.

meanwhile at steve harrington's house, dustin was over seeking advice about his girlfriend, suzie. they had always been long distance but were extremely committed. dustin was sitting at the kitchen table as steve made him a snack. steve had always acted like a parental figure to dustin, which was part of what you found so attractive about him.

"she keeps on asking me about the future, steve," dustin sighed. "i'm 15! my future is literally an imaginative concept at this point!"

"okay, well-" steve began as the phone rang. "one second."

steve walked over to the cream colored phone that was on the wall in the kitchen. it had been picked out by his mom three months ago after her business trip to manhattan. he smiled at the thought then answered the phone.

"harrington residence, steve speaking," he said.

"steve!" you'd said with relief on the other end of the phone.

"(y/n)?" he asked, looking at dustin, who's eyes got big. dustin started freaking out, silently trying to get steve to talk to you. "what's up?"

"i'm so sorry to bother you-" you began.

"bother me? what? you'd never bother me," he replied. you sensed a smile in his voice but on the other end of the phone dustin was palming his forehead and steve was practically shaking.
