That day at the hospital was filled with awkward glances and brief shoulder brushes. Owen just wanted to run up to Amelia, throw his arms around her, and bring her to his chest. He couldn't. No one, except Meredith, knew about their secret love affair. Owen was still Chief of Surgery, even though he desperately sought a replacement, and was braking his own rules. He knew Amelia would never agree to sign the HR paper. Commitment was hard for both of them, and shoving a piece of paper between it might rip apart the amazing thing they had started.

Owen's pager went off with a 911 to the ER. A mass trauma was coming in 20 minutes, and there was little time to get everyone ready. His thoughts shifted from his love life to his work life. He sprinted down the hallway, virtually plowing over some nurses along the way, and caught the elevator just as the doors were closing.

"Well that was close," a voice behind him said. He turned around to see Amelia standing in the corner of the crowded elevator.

Owen moved through the crowd until he was standing right next to her. "Tell me about it. Did you get the page too?"

Amelia nodded and grabbed his hand despite the mass of people around them. He fingers folded into his; a perfect fit. He usually soft fingers were a little rough from rubbing in and out all day. Owen wished they were alone so he could hold her in his arms and kiss her softly.

The elevator doors opened and the chaos of the ER became visible. April Kepner usually ran a pretty tight ship, but when 100 people are coming in need of treatment, things can't help but get a little crazy. Kepler ordered Amelia off for a near consult and sent Owen to help a man with severe internal bleeding. That meant he was going to be tied up in the OR for a while.

Amelia's neuro consults all went fine. Both fortunately and unfortunately, no one needed brain surgery. She was left to fend for herself until something came along for her to do.

Somehow, Amelia found herself in the gallery of OR 1, watching Owen and Meredith help a man who was bleeding internally. Amelia was the only one in the gallery so she was able to get a clear seat. She felt kind of guilty to be watching a surgery instead of performing one, but there was nothing for her to do. She watched as Owen's hands moved in tandem with Grey's. The mic was turned on, so she could make out what they were saying. Their pace was steady and not hectic, so the surgery must've been going well.

Meredith Grey looked up from her patient and caught sight of her sister-in-law watching from the gallery.

"Shouldn't she be saving someone's life?" Meredith said with a sting in her voice.

"There must not be any neuro traumas," Owen said glancing up.

"Or she's avoiding work to watch you," Meredith said.

"Amelia's not like that," Owen asked the scrub nurse for another clamp.

"I know, I'm just watching out for you," Meredith hooked the clamp around an artery.

"Meredith I'm a grown man, I think I can take care of myself," Owen suctioned a pool of blood that began to form.

"I promised Cristina I would look out for you, I'm just fulfilling that promise," Meredith made a cut, removing over half of the man's liver.

"Cristina? She's gone Meredith. Let it go. I have to move on sometime!" Owen lifted the liver out of the patient and into a bag for medical waste.

"Fine, more suction please," Meredith's eyes shifted to the gallery, but Amelia had vanished.
