(AN - I wanted to put this up sooner, but my internet went out and then I had family issues. Hopefully I can get another chapter out in a couple days. Sorry for the wait!)
Itto's POV
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Gorou...!"
"I'm busy."
"But Puppy...!"
"Stop calling me that in front of people!" The group of soldiers laughed anyway. I just stayed quiet after seeing the flustered look on his face. He had enlisted Kujou Sara's help in training former soldiers to do other jobs. He trusted her judgment of their skills, so she had sorted them into career clusters while I was relegated to sitting around like a dumbass on the ground.
"So... Your sister."
"Your crush is sad, Sara. She's got a girlfriend."
"I know, but -"
"She loves Mystery Girl. I don't want you to end up hurt from pining."
"I'm -"
"General Gorou! There's a huge group of ronin on the west coast!"
"I'm on my way!"
"Gorou -"
"Keep an eye on the himbo for me, yeah?" He didn't wait for a response, running off towards the previous speaker.
"I'm not a himbo...!" She groaned into her hands, thumping down beside me with a frustrated look. "...What's wrong Kujou Tengu?"
"He doesn't understand that we're dating. For someone so smart, he's oblivious as fuck."
"Just kiss her in front of him."
"That's... She's worried. I don't wanna put more stress on Angelfish."
"You two have the worst nicknames -"
"Horny Boy! Call Tantei before she gets hurt!"
"Tantei!" The puppy hurried over, snuggling into my side with a small whine.
"Thank you!"
"No problem Puppy!~" He flipped me off before disappearing over the hill again. I barely noticed her exasperated look. "What?"
"Our nicknames are bad?"
"We're not dating, so it's different." She rolled her eyes again, walking off to help people again. After maybe five minutes, I got bored, so Tantei followed me on a walk along the beach. Midday had the calmest water, water gently washing over my feet as Tantei tried to attack the gentle seaspray and eat crabs. "Baby, leave it alone. C'mon."
"Fight me," she argued back - I had to imagine based on her little yips and determined wagging.
"The crab'll hurt you, little lady. Wanna race?" A bark-bounce duo reached my ears before she took off, forcing me to follow. When the teasing barks became worried and upset, I sped up, freezing at the scene.
A trio of soldiers knocked out in the sand while Gorou tried to single-handedly fend off at least a dozen ronin. Everything went black for a second, leaving me panting, growling, and covered in blood, club in hand. I tensed as a hand touched my back, but the sad whimper that followed gave away who it was.
