I don't know what to do. They're both here. Both of my crushes, standing right in front of me.
"Hi Max!" El exclaims, "We're going to the cabin to see if we can find any loose wood, we're building a treehouse!" She wears a beaming smile that creates butterflies in my stomach. God, she's so adorable. "What are you doing?" I freeze, trying to come up with a believable lie.
"Yeah, we haven't seen you in awhile, where have you been?" Lucas asks, a genuine look of concern on his face.
"I-um, I actually wanted to talk to both of you," I spit out, immediately regretting what I said. "Actually, we-um, we don't need to."
"No, we can talk," El says, her smile turning into a look of concern similar to Lucas.
"Well, there's this thing, I guess." I barely even manage to say. Shit. There's no way I'm getting out of this.
"What is it?" they ask at the same time.
I can feel my palms sweating and my heart beating faster and faster. I rub my hands together, hoping to wipe the sweat off. They're both still staring at me, which doesn't help. I'm going to have to say this sometime, and I can't think of anything else to say to weasel my way out of here, so I do it.

"I like you."

Silence.

I can hear my heart beating in my chest.

I really want to just run away right now and curl up in a ball in my bedroom and never come out again.

"Which one of us did you mean?" El asks, breaking the silence.
"Okay so I wasn't the only one confused," Lucas says with a sigh of relief, "I was like, is she looking at you or me?"
I take a deep breath, I have to finish what I started.

"That's the thing..." I shakily say, "I like both of you."

I said it.

I slowly start backing away, looking for an escape route.

Silence again.

Longer this time.

I see them send a confused glance at each other, and see it as my only chance.

I run.

And run.

And run away.

Not ever looking back.

I just run.

I don't hear them say anything.

I don't hear anyone following me.

So I keep running.

I run without stopping all the way back to my house.

I run up the driveway, open the door, and slam it behind me as I walk in.

I don't care that my mom scolds me for slamming it.

I don't care that my brother stares at me like I've gone insane as I walk to my room.

I don't care that my room is a gigantic mess and I don't have the energy to clean it.

I don't care.

I shut my door.

I lay down on my bed, facing the ceiling.

I don't care about anything except for the big fucking mistake I just made.
