10 Years Ago:

I jumped off my bed, after finishing a graphic novel.  I ran over to my backpack, pulling out a green reading log that I had to complete for school.  Hurriedly, I scribbled the minutes down, pretending that the comic was a chapter book.

Ha.

"PETER!  COME DOWN!"  I heard my mother scream from the kitchen.

I slid down the hallway, stopping when I saw both of my parents sitting down, waiting for me.

"What's up?"  I attempt, trying to be my cool 9 year old self.

"Sit down," my father commands, pulling out a chair.

My once smiling face starts to harden.  "What's going on?"

"Peter, would you like to help us with our jobs?"  my mother asks, placing a hand over mine.

My eyes widen.

I never knew what their jobs actually were, just that it was enough to live on.

I shrug.

My father glances at my mother.  My mother sends a look back.

Parents.  They always have a glancing system.

"Listen, Peter, we want to tell you something that you should never tell anyone.  Not one person.  No one.  If you do, I will take all of your comics away."  my father threatens.

"They're called graphic novels!"  I argue.

My father glares at me.

My eyes begin to blur.  My parents were usually pretty laid back, but I've never seen them this harsh before.

"The point is, what we're about to tell you, you must not repeat to anyone."  my mother tries.

I attempt a nod.  "Won't tell anyone.  I promise."

My father gives a sturdy nod.

"Sweetie, we take stuff from people who have too much. To make the world a better place for you."  my mother explains.

"Oh, like Robin Hood?"  I exclaim.

My parents are exciting!

"Exactly like Robin Hood."  my father agrees.  He looks relieved.

"So would you like to accompany us?"  my father asks.

I start to bounce in my seat.  Seriously?  To become one of Robin's Merry Men?  I could tell all of my fri- But I couldn't.

Anyway, it was an exciting adventure, nonetheless.

"Yes!  Sure!"  I smile.

My mom smiles back at me.  "Let's go tonight."
