sun crept into the surfer boy's van as argyle drove further into the desert. sunlight shining onto the two boys in the back.will stole glances over at mike fidgeting with the tie on his poster that held it rolled together. he knew he would have to show mike at some point, but it was just a matter of bringing himself to actually doing so. i mean why else did he spend so much time on it?
"hey, mike?" will tapped mike's shoulder to get his attention gesturing to his poster.
"what's up?" mike stared blankly at will, he looked tired.
"um, well i wanted to show you something..." will caught jonathan giving him a glance through the side mirrors but he ignored his thumbs up.
"it's uh poster... el commissioned me to paint it for you" will lied "see there's you... the heart" will pointed to a knight figure holding a shield. "and there's dustin, lucas, and me" will added trying to slyly change the subject of mike being the 'heart'.
mike looked up at will in awe admiring all the brush strokes and details. "this is great will..." mike smiled taking the poster in his hands to further examine.
"i'm glad you like it" will blushed into his seat as he watched mike
"yeah this is awesome" mike stared back at will "how long did this take you?"
"about a week give or take a couple days" will rubbed the back of his neck remembering all his struggles with the painting.
"and el commissioned you to paint it?" mike rubbed his hand on his black jeans in confusion "she told me she didn't know about it, that you wouldn't show anyone. she said she thought it was for a girl..."
will sat in his seat avoiding eye contact with mike trying to think of some sort of excuse. "um..."
"well you know el just wanted to keep it a big surprise so she lied about it." jonathan piped in turning his head from the front seat briefly staring at will.
will voiced a silent 'thank you' and jonathan nodded his head and gave him a look while gesturing to an oblivious mike.
"so, how are things?" will asked "with you and el i mean" will sighed he knew they were going through a rough spot but he still felt extremely envious of what el had in front of her, no matter what lovers quarrel they were in at the moment.
"things are... well actually i don't really know where we stand at this point, if i'm going to be painfully honest with myself" mike supplied giving a drained sigh.
"has anything happened?" will asked not exactly caring for an answer unless if it was mike deciding to break up with el... which is wrong! very wrong. it's not fair to wish for them to split even if will is dreadfully in love with oblivious wheeler.
"well, she thinks i don't love her... and she's not completely wrong i just... i don't know i've been feeling different about things i used to be sure about lately." mike admitted holding his face in his hands staring at his dirtied converse.
"yeah, i can understand that and also i think it can be really scary admitting how you truly feel to someone you really care about... if you love them or not." will looked over at his painting hoping mike understood.
"yeah, thanks will" mike smiled at will the two staring completely into one another. will knew at this point there was no other person to walk this universe that would be perfect as mike wheeler no matter how dumb he could be.
"hey brochachos what's your opinion on some burritos?" argyle patted his stomach "i don't know about you bros but i could eat a two lumped camel right now."
