Chase teleported me back to my dorm. I turned to face him and gave him a small smile.
"Thanks for bringing me back. I...uh...had a good time tonight. Surprisingly." Chase chuckled.
"I can be fun when I wanna be." I grinned.
"Fun is a 'slight' understatement, Chase." He backed me up against the door and gently took my hands. I took a sharp breath in as I tilted my head up slightly.
"I can think of a lot of different ways to end this night on a high note." I shook my head, a small teasing smile on my face.
"Not tonight. You'll have to try a little harder to seduce me, Collins." I headed into my room and shut the door behind me.
"Meet me in Salem, at the site of the Witch Trials. Tomorrow. You will give me your Power." I jumped as I looked further into my room. Putnam sat on my bed comfortably.
"Why would I do that? Especially when I know what you'll do with my Power?"
"You'll give me your Power or I will kill all of your friends. One...by...one."
"How do I know you're telling the truth?"
"That stupid descendant of mine is still standing outside your door." I heard Chase scream and whirled around. I pulled open the door and dropped to his side.
"Chase!" I grabbed his face and forced him to look at me. "Look at me, Chase! It's okay. It's gonna be okay." Chase looked at me, frantic and in pain.
"What...what are...you gonna...do?" I turned back to Putnam.
"Fine! I'll do it!" Suddenly, Chase groaned and sat up, with my help. "You're gonna be okay. Just go back to wherever you're staying. I'm gonna handle this and it'll be over for good." Chase gave me a weird look.
"What...are you...talking about?"
"Don't worry about it."
I got up and shut the door again. I turned to face Putnam. I can't let him win. And...I think I might know how to take him down with me. Linking. When he kills me, he'll die, too.
"I'll meet you at the site of the Salem Witch Trials tomorrow. Just let me have one last normal day before I die." Putnam rolled his eyes.
"Fine, but after your classes tomorrow, you will meet me at the site of the Salem Witch Trials." I nodded.
"Okay. Deal. If you leave them alone, even after I die, I'll give you my Power." Putnam sneered.
"Good."
Then he disappeared. I took a deep, shaky breath. I can't believe he seriously took the bait. I thought he'd see right through my acceptance. The next day, I got picked up for classes by Chase.
"Morning, princess." I smiled half-heartedly.
"Hey, Collins." I walked out of my room and locked the door.
"What's wrong?" I chuckled softly and shook my head.
"I can't tell you. But I can tell you that you'll be safe when it's over." Chase chuckled, slightly uncomfortable.
"What...are you talking about?" I surprised myself and Chase by taking his hand.
"Don't worry about it, Collins."
We headed to my first class of the day. I slipped out of my last class of the day a little early to avoid Chase. I teleported to Salem and walked to the Salem Witch Trials site. I paced back and forth as the sun started to go down. The area was almost completely empty.
"Good to know you're early. Now...will me your Power." I turned to face Putnam, who was standing near the memorial. I nodded at him and waved my hand, linking us together.
"You really wanna do this here in the open?"
"Yes, I want your Power as soon as I can have it." I nodded.
"Okay. I...will you..."
"No, wait! I want you to suffer, you little, cowardly bitch." I resisted the urge to smirk. I can't let him know my plan.
"Okay."
"Come closer, child." I walked closer, stopping just in front of Putnam.
"Okay. Take my Power."
Putnam grabbed my head, almost digging his nails into my temple. I screamed as I felt everything seeping out of me and into Putnam. My Power and my life force. My head felt like it was on fire and I had to resist the urge to hit him with a telekinetic blast or a ball of fire.
"Hey! Let her go, you sorry excuse for an ancestor!" Chase! He's not supposed to be here!
"Ah!" I screamed. My knees started to give out under me.
"Chase, Reid, Tyler! Take the middle! Pogue, left! I'll take right! Go!" Caleb! None...of them...were supposed...to be...here! I dropped to my knees as my vision started to go dark.
"Our deal is broken! Your Power is mine! Your friends are mine!"
"No! Our...deal didn't...speak...of them...interrupting...this..." I breathed out and fell to the ground as everything went dark.
"No!"
