A party was being thrown for current and alumni superheroes, those who had been in the infamous Seven and forced out in one way or another. Some had simply retired, always attending the parties with a happy-go-lucky attitude. I had been one of those supes Vought had kicked out; they were subtle about it, telling me my powers were no longer of use to them.Truth is, they needed a replacement. Apparently, Starlight's light energy blasts were superior to my prediction of natural disasters and the ability to turn them to my favor. No matter. I was living life comfortably and staying out of their way. I loved the parties, though. I danced my heart out, not caring who saw and drank their expensive liquors. Not to an excess, but enough over the years to hurt them a little. This time, I'd meet someone who would change my life in a dramatic way. This time would lead me to catch unexpected feelings, making me act irrationally. It began the night of the party to celebrate being a superhero. Vought Tower was lit up, the brightest light in New York City for the night. I arrived around 8 when everything had already started. There were a few drunk and high supes running around chatting or dancing with others making some more people cringe away from them.
Music blared, lights flared, and I got to work, heading to the dancefloor to work up a sweat. The big names hadn't arrived yet, but I managed to dance with Starlight to get her comfortable among the partygoers. To my surprise, she had been worried I was upset about her replacing me. I reassured it wasn't a problem and pulled her against my body, keeping her away from the Deep's interest. She danced with me for a half hour, drifting away to talk to other people, leaving me to enjoy myself further.
Needing a drink, I left the floor a few minutes later, heading to the bar, and flagging down the bartender. He held up a finger to signal he'd be over when he could, currently in the middle of taking a big order at the other side of the bar. As I waited, another woman sidled up to the bar to wait as well. I did a double take, recognizing her immediately.
"You're Queen Maeve. I've seen you with Homelander," I greeted her.
"Just Maeve. You're weather girl. I'm sorry. Your name has escaped me," she said.
"Delilah Leblanc. Is that what they call me? Weather girl? As if I can control the weather. Natural disasters are my specialty. No thunderstorms, rain, or any of that bullshit," Maeve laughed, tucking strands of her auburn hair behind an ear.
"Delilah. Pretty name. I don't think I've seen you at these parties before,"
"Mmm. It might be because I'm usually on the dancefloor. I come off for drinks but that's all. Besides, you're off making out with Homelander," I explained. The bartender came down to us and took our order; a tequila sunrise for me and a whiskey for Maeve. She toyed with the glass, her smile turning into a frown.
"Are you okay? Is Homie giving you a hard time?" I asked.
"Not anymore. We broke up. A couple of days ago before Starlight's induction to the team," she answered.
"Oh. I'm sorry to hear that," She nodded. "Want to dance it out? I've heard its great therapy," I continued. She turned to face me, looking me up and down, taking me in.
"You know what? Sure. I'd love to," I pulled her to the dancefloor, drinks in hand and held her close to me as we jammed out. We both let go, the music flowing through our bodies and not giving a fuck to our problems or worries. We finished our drinks, pausing to put the glasses back on the bar and continued our fun.
As the night went on, we got closer, our bodies grinding on top of each other to keep others away from us. At one point, Maeve turned my body to face her, yanking me as close as possible. Out of nowhere or perhaps feeling the unspoken chemistry between us, she kissed me, both hands cupping my face. Shock froze me and she pulled back sensing it.
