Sweat dripped down my back as I stood around on set waiting for Maeve and Starlight to join me. The team had been taken down to a beach in Florida for a photo shoot, group, and individual commercials, as well as a promotional one featuring all the heroes; this would turn into a vacation once the important tasks were dealt with. Today happened to be the first day of the commercial shoots. We were starting out with the individual shoots and the group ones, each member assigned to a specific group.
I'd been grouped with Maeve and Starlight, the three of us being semi-friends; the more time I spent with Maeve, the more I wished I was something more with her. Her beauty knocked me off my feet the first day I met her, and I found myself falling for her every day since. I had been recruited because of my ability to numb people from pain. It came as a benefit to take down enemies without having them scream out during a battle. I didn't love using my power, feeling drained whenever used on those who Vought believed we needed to dispose of. Oftentimes, they were used on those who were no longer of use to the company. My moral compass became one of the reasons Starlight reached out to me.
She needed more allies to expose the true colors of the Seven and Vought International. Starlight wanted the people to see the whole truth, attempting to take them down from the inside. I needed friends like her, ones who I could talk to about anything...outside of the tower and the day-to-day activities of being a "superhero". Through her I met Hughie Campbell, her boyfriend and a member of a group trying to eliminate the Seven; the main goal was to annihilate Homelander, the leader of our group. Then came Maeve.
She'd gotten tired of the bullshit among the team. She had been brought into the true light of Homelander's nature. He frightened her with some of the choices he made, whether his own decision or acting under Vought's rule. The day she decided to switch sides occurred on a night when I made plans with Starlight to go drinking.
'Can I join you? I'm in need of some conversation and a good drink,' she greeted me on the way out of the tower.
'Sure. You can ride with me. We're meeting at a bar uptown,' I told her. Outside of the tower, Maeve was funny and kind. She showed her vulnerable side, her insecurities peeking through about certain ideas about herself or her future. We connected on a deep level that night, trading numbers to talk if we needed someone to listen late at night. Over the course of a few months, we grew closer and my feelings for her became apparent...to me.
I couldn't tell her how I felt, worrying she still had feelings for her ex-girlfriend Elena. I didn't want to be in the way if Maeve thought Elena would be her soulmate. I kept my feelings hidden, content to have Maeve by my side.
"Is it supposed to be this hot all every day? I'm sweating my ass off," Maeve's voice brought me back to present time.
"I think it might get hotter. Maybe the high 90's, but the heat index could get in the 100's," I told her.
"Fuck. I hope we won't be out here much longer. I want to get in the water,"
"I second that," Starlight came up on my other side, the directors setting us up in a specific way to shoot our commercial. We were promoting a new product from the three of us, serving a purpose to strong women everywhere. As if they truly cared about anyone, much less strong women. We did several takes before they were satisfied and stepped off set; dismissed for the day.
"Have you tried out the outdoor showers at the resort? They feel amazing in this heat," Starlight said.
"No, not yet. Ashley has us running around to get photo shoots and interviews done. This is our first break of the week," Maeve said.
