another one bites the dust [ ❧ ]

Gravel crunches underfoot, dust kicking up into your faces as you near the summit of the hill. The sun peeks over the horizon, blinding you both as you forge on.

"This was a shitty idea!"

You whisper-shout at him as you finally clamor to the top of the hill. A dense thatch of briars and dead foliage gives you temporary sanctuary as you both dive behind the ditch, stray scratches and thorns being the least of your concern right now.

"Well- ", says Street, his voice low as he shuffles in next to you and peers over his shoulder. "You're the one who says we should get out more as a couple, babe. And hey, wasn't this one of the hiking trails you said you wanted us to try out?"

Straining your ears, you can hear footsteps nearing. "I meant on one of our days off, as a normal fucking couple! Not as two SWAT officers who just sprinted away from an active meth lab after getting ma- "

Street's hand is rough and warm when it presses over your mouth, effectively silencing you. You're about to launch into a tirade of swears and threats when out of the corner of your eye, you catch the glimmer of a pistol barrel peeking out from behind one of the trees a few hundred yards from you. Shit.

The dry leaves crunch softly as you shuffle as quietly away as you can. Dried mud and sweat mars your uniform, aiding in your attempt to blend in with the background of the forest floor. Light catches and glints off of your equipment, none of which is of any use to you now - radios back with your stranded car, guns holding only a couple stray bullets you're hoping to not have to use.

Shaking his hand off of you with a pointed look, you tug him close. "I have a plan."

His once humored features now bear a look of anticipation - but it's not one of distrust, so you'll take it.

"Long as it doesn't involve us running up and down that damn hill again, I'm all for it."

With a grin, you unholster your sidearm and throw a glance at your half-empty magazine. "Trust me baby, if this works then we won't be the ones kicking the dust today."
