"What you did out there today." Street's voice is quiet as you walk into the house, shutting the door behind you as you drop your bags in the hall and look on as he walks into the kitchen. "Don't do that shit again. Ever."

Duke circles your legs excitedly, and you lean down to pet him as you look at Street quizzically. "Don't do what?"

"Worry me like that." He's still got his back turned to you as he opens the fridge and reaches in, fishing out two beers as you flop down on the sofa and Duke climbs into your lap. His tone of voice is shaky, too shaky, and it hurts your heart to listen to as you sink back on the sofa and finally start to relax. "It's not fucking fair. I was so scared for you, for your safety, and you didn't even check in when you were supposed to."

"Jim", you say with a sigh, resting your head on the back of the sofa as Duke stretches out on your lap and Street walks to you, holding out a bottle as he looks to you worriedly. "You know I couldn't have checked in, things were too hot. I know I was supposed to but it would've risked my cover."

"Look, I get that. I just- " He shakes his head as he sits next to you, reaching out to pet Duke absentmindedly as he takes a swig of his beer. He avoids your eyes as he speaks, but his hand comes to a rest on your thigh and he brushes his thumb back and forth soothingly. "I can't do that again. Feel that scared and useless while you're in the field, and I have no way of helping you. Please don't put me through it again."

"I won't." You reach out and cup his cheek, gently turning his face to look at you. "Swear."

He smiles tiredly into your hand, shaking his head at you. "You're gonna be the death of me. You know that?"

But as you smile at him and lean across to kiss him, rousing Duke in the process and making you both laugh as he whines, he knows he'd die a happy man.
