Working long shifts at the hospital was nothing Y/N wasn't accustomed to. It was when she worked 3 18 hour shifts 3 weeks in a row that her body really started to give out. Not even caffeine could pull her out of her tired eyes and sad gaze.

Running a hospital practically alone was exhausting. Not to mention, running a hospital straight out of college practically alone.

She stirred her coffee and scanned her clipboard, making a few red marks on patients she should probably check in on sooner or later.

"Ayeee Y/N!" the familiar face of Alex Bregman came through the door with an In-N-Out burger bag in his left hand, holding it up with a huge grin on his face.

"Hey Alex," she tiredly smiled back at him, as he engulfed her into a hug. They met at an Astros game a few years back when she was there to watch Cavan.

To Y/N, Alex was her best friend and nothing more. She fell in love a long time ago with someone else and she couldn't do it again.

To Alex though, Y/N was practically the love of his life. He knew she didn't like him like that. But he'd get her one way or another.

"I got you a burger." he sheepishly grinned, handing her the bag.

"Thanks," she smiled, graciously taking the bag, "You didn't have to bring me food."

"I know." Alex said, "I just know how hard you work around here."

"Thanks," Y/N said once again, eating a fry from out of the bag, taking another glance down at her clipboard.

Alex looked at Y/N's Y/H/C hair locked up in a messy ponytail with worn curls in it. Her skin was starting to look pale from being inside 24/7. He wasn't sure how to cheer her up. She wouldn't admit she was sad or exhausted, but he knew she was.

"How's Cavan?" he finally asked.

Like a child being asked if they wanted a cookie, Y/N's eyes shot up from the counter and to Alex.

"Cavan?" she repeated to herself. Cavan hadn't been on her mind these past few days.

Cavan was a sore subject for her. It wasn't like the really were anything or they did anything to each other. But she loved him and he left with pieces of her.

They hadn't talked in awhile, considering they were best friends. He promised he'd come visit her while in Houston, but he never came. She went to the game and watched him play but opted not to notify his family or him that she was there.

He wasn't necessarily the best anymore, but he was still good. She couldn't bare to turn on the television and watch him anymore though because it gave her the urge to call him, and she didn't want to annoy him.

"Cavans alright." Y/N nodded, "I haven't seen him in awhile."

"That's good. Talked at all?" Alex continued.
