January 2027 London Seventh year of the end of the Great Purge
John has been busy lately, not with work, but with putting Sally's whim to rest.
When Sally said she wanted to adopt a child, John didn't really take it seriously. But after repeatedly being dragged to the orphanage, John realized that Sally in fact meant it.
He gave Sally a serious analysis of the pros and cons, such as she was not physically capable of such work; she was having a hard time taking care of herself, let alone a child; and Sally was still young and deserved to move on to a new relationship, at most she could have a pet or something.
It only took Sally two sentences to made John surrender, " Look, John, even being pregnant through rape, I never thought of abortion. I may hate the people who hurt me, but not once did I resent the kids."
"I want to be a mother again." Sally concluded.
After Anthea's death, Sally's life in the women's cell got worse, she had to work two hours instead of one, and was constantly harassed by the guards.
When she was raped for the second time, Sally clenched her teeth and refused to tell anyone, instead she cleaned herself up and went back to work. And then came the third and fourth time ......
Sally finally had enough and placed a piece of glass she sneaked away on her neck, only to discover by accident that she was pregnant.
Despite not knowing who the father was, Sally decided to keep the baby. She was religious and had always loved children, even if they were not shared with the her beloved.
But, alas, how could such condition tolerate the birth of a child. Two and a half month later, Sally had an miscarriage, and was thrown out of her cell to work shortly after the incident.
It was until her second miscarriage had John and the others receive the news, delivered by a fellow inmate who felt bad for Sally and risked her life to inform them about Sally's current situation.
Andersen was frantic, he raved, trying to get out of his cell, Greg stopped him in his track, and John had no choice but to knock him out or else the guards will notice them.
After much discussion with Greg, they concluded that Sally had to be transferred to a less guarded prison or she would not make it out alive.
With Mike working in the infirmary at the time, John and the others planned to pass the message to her through Mike that she should stay "sick" so that the guards would notice the urgency of her condition.
The first task was to sneak into the infirmary to see Mike, and with John and Greg as the prime focus, there was little hope of them doing so.
Anderson was the only option left. He was told not to be impulsive, not to linger, and leave as soon as the message was delivered.
Anderson had managed to do it well.
Despite seeing Sally lying lifeless in a hospital bed from afar through the glass, Anderson reined himself in and turned away. He understood that this wasn't just about him and Sally, he was responsible for the lives of Mike, John and Greg, and he couldn't afford to mess it up.
Anderson, the stubborn, irascible, bad-tempered man he was, had learned to choose responsibility over sentiment.
Yet the guards were no fools. When they caught Anderson changing shifts for no apparent reason, they knew something was going on and assumed that it had to do with Greg and his friends. During Anderson's interrogation, Greg and John were brought in to watch.
