"Right, gang," Hiccup instructed the next day at the academy, "We've got a lot of ground to cover. Astrid, you're with the twins."
"What?" Astrid groaned.
"What? You want me to pair you with Snotlout?" Hiccup asked, "Speaking of which, Fishlegs, you're with Snotlout."
"What?" Fishlegs groaned.
"It's either him or the twins," Hiccup argued.
"Well, someone has to keep them in check," Astrid sighed.
"I hate it when you're right," Fishlegs mumbled.
"Ingrid, you're with me," Hiccup said.
Everyone flew off in separate directions. Ingrid and Aurora followed at Hiccup and Toothless's heels. They flew over the spot where Astrid had discovered the trails.
"There's more of them, and more holes," Hiccup said.
They flew lower. They hadn't quite reached the ground when it began to rumble and shake. Then a giant, white snakelike beast emerged from the ground and flew high into the air.
"The Screaming Death!" Hiccup shouted.
"Watch out for its-" Ingrid tried to warn, but Hiccup couldn't react fast enough. Toothless was struck by its whiplike tail which flailed about as it flew. Hiccup was caught on one of the Screaming Death's spines and was carried away shouting as it flew away. Toothless, meanwhile, fell to the ground.
"Quick, let's fly after it," Ingrid cried, but Aurora hesitated and looked back at Toothless. Ingrid had noticed his red prosthetic tail before, but she hadn't really thought too hard about it until now.
"You go chase that thing down," Ingrid said, sliding off Aurora. Aurora took off.
"OK, Toothless, we're gonna try our best together," Ingrid ran over to the night coloured dragon, "We're gonna get Hiccup back, alright?"
She climbed onto him and took a few moments to work out how the tail worked, then they took off into the air together.
"Wow, you're really fast!" Ingrid gasped as they darted through the sky. They caught up to Aurora and the Screaming Death in no time. Ingrid angled Toothless just below where Hiccup was dangling, then Hiccup safely dropped down onto Toothless. Toothless fell back so Aurora could catch up and Ingrid leapt down onto her own dragon.
"I can't believe I did that," Ingrid gasped, "I can't believe I just flew a Night Fury, how cool was that?"
"Now we just have to figure out how to get this thing to leave," Hiccup said.
"I think I have an idea," Ingrid said, "But you'll probably think I'm crazy."
"You're going to try to train that thing, aren't you?" Hiccup sighed.
"Yes, yes I am," Ingrid replied.
