In the weeks prior I have resumed my tradition of visiting the city. Memories weigh heavily on my heart as of late, but visiting the people helps to calm the ache. The children have grown since last I visited. They were always so excited to hear my tales of adventure and battle. I never shared anything gruesome or frightening, just things to keep them entertained. The older amongst them were interested in the lessons I had to offer. I would recommend books and studies for them to pursue. Most of my time was spent with the younger group, as they demanded most of my attention. It gave their parents a reprieve from the stress of handling children. I didnt mind watching over them. Their wonder and admiration never failed to put a smile on my face. Occasionally they would ask to delve into topics that they weren't ready for. Myths and tales about our enemies meant to scare them were a topic of great concern among them, which I always did my best to put to rest. Once the other children had gone to play, I heard a meek voice from behind me. "Mrs. Sabyr" she called to me. She was a shy young girl who always seemed to wait for the others to part from me before approaching. I did not notice her parents approaching behind me as I asked what she wanted to ask me. She came closer and looked into my heart, and with childlike wonder, she asked me: "does it hurt to die?" Never had a question stopped me cold. I turned to see her parents behind me, her mother shocked and concerned as to what I would say. I cleared my throat and turned back to the young girl, brushing a strand of hair from her face gently. I had no words to explain what she wanted to know. Not because I did not want to answer her, but because I'm not sure I knew the answer myself. I turned her back to her parents and stepped away. I felt remorse not finding the words to comfort her, but I don't know if it hurts to die. Maybe I've become numb to the pain, if there is any. Who knows if my metal skin can truly feel pain. I'm afraid I'll never know, and perhaps neither will she. I hope that one day she will find peace with her mortality. I'm afraid that I may have to do the same.
