The sun was already rising when she returned to the Gryffindor common room - shutting the portrait behind her before collapsing onto the wooden floor.

Because though she had been aware of it for years, her fate just seemed to be this intangible thing, ominously waiting ahead. Yet now, it was real.

A horcrux. The curse that was put upon her since birth, and her brother ever since he survived the first attack Voldemort put upon their family.

It was real now.

Anna clasped her hands over her mouth - attempting to stifle her sobs with the sleeve of her sweater as tears cascaded down her cheeks.

She was going to die.

And she would be alone, rolling in her grave for eternity. The worst part was that she knew she had done it to herself.

“Anna?”

She looked up, startled to see Ginny standing only a few feet away - closer than she had stood by her side for the entire year.

She was just like Anna remembered; the scent of cinnamon paired with a presence that just seemed to glow. It was one of the things that had attracted Anna to her in the first place. Ginny had always been fearless.

It was something that Anna had always wished she could be.

Though she saw Ginny’s hands subtly tremble as she stared.

“Ginny I- I’m so sorry.” She stammered out. All her walls were coming down, and she couldn’t stop it. “I’m sorry for all the things I said and for being a horrible friend. And I just - I can’t forgive myself.”

Anna’s laugh was almost manic. “Bloody hell. I’m just poison, aren’t I? Everything I touch dies.”

“That’s not true, Anna.” Ginny whispered lowly. Anna didn’t look at her face - couldn’t. “You know that’s not true.”

“No matter what I do, I can’t help but destroy. Because something inside me aches. Even when I’m at my happiest.”

Slowly, she took a deep breath.

There was a time and place to fall apart, and this wasn’t it. She had things to do - and she was determined to get them done.

Anna stood from her place on the floor, giving Ginny a tight smile. “I did wrong by you. And I’m sorry for that. But I can’t keep you as my friend if that’s not what you want to be. Not when I’ve done so many things to hurt you.”

“What are you saying?” Ginny asked.

“I’m saying that…I know that it’s not easy. To be my friend. I’m hurting, Gin. And I hurt the people I love because I can never admit that. I know I’ve hurt you a lot. I also know that you’re happier without me.”

Her mind recalls Ginny walking in the halls - her constant laughter and happiness radiating off her as she walked through the crowd. It was a side of her that she had never really seen before.

“So if you’re better off without me, please go. I don’t want to hurt you anymore.”

Before she can say anything else, Ginny’s arms are wrapped around her, her face pressed into Anna’s shoulder.

“You stupid idiot.” She whispered hoarsely. “How could I ever be happy without my best friend?”

And somehow, Anna knew they’d be okay.
