Her heart felt oddly heavy as she stood at the platform - eyes misty as she fixed her gaze towards the nature ahead.
It was the only end of another year, but somehow, it felt more…finite. As if everything was about to end.
Though, she wasn’t half wrong.
Anna would never finish Hogwarts. She’d never get the chance to grow up, graduate and experience what the magical world offered past her school’s stone walls.
She half wondered if Draco would just forget about her and move on.
It hadn’t taken a mathemetician to figure out what had happened. From what she had heard from the others, Draco had been assigned to kill Dumbledore, but Snape had done the deed for him.
Whilst the relationship between herself and the professor had never fully healed, she was grateful for what Snape had done. There were some acts of violence you could never come back from, and she was sure that the murder of Dumbledore would’ve changed Draco forever.
Truly, their world would never be the same.
Everything that had happened over the years, from the sorcerer’s stone to the death of Dumbledore, it had all been building up to reach this boiling point - a war that would determine the future of the Wizarding World forever.
Before she knew it, her feet were moving, racing along the cobblestone floors with a mind of their own. Though she supposed she knew where she was going.
No matter what, somehow, she was always led back to him.
He stood by his train car, head down as his long blond bangs covered his eyes. It wasn’t like Draco to be so demure.
As she stepped closer, it was almost as if he sensed her presence. His entire form stiffened and he practically flinched away from her as she came forward.
Her frown deepened.
“What’s wrong?” Anna asked, as if she didn’t know exactly what was wrong. As if everything hadn’t changed.
Yet she could still pretend, couldn’t she?
Draco scoffed, his hands clenching at his sides. “You shouldn’t be here. If your brother saw us-”
“Harry isn’t here,” She reminded him. “And even if he was it wouldn’t matter. He doesn’t get a say for what we are.”
“And what are we?” He asked dryly.
She winced. “Draco…”
“Forget it.” He insisted, though they both knew they couldn’t.
A cool breeze blew through them, ruffling Draco’s hair. The sunlight was hitting it just right, revealing the silvery strands within chiffon. She pretended she didn’t notice, training her gaze between his brows.
His eyes were dangerous. And if she lost her nerve now, she’d never get it back.
“I wish I could say it, truly I do.” Anna began, voice trembling. She attempted to hide her fingers’ steady tremble, pressing them against the hem of her top. “But I…I don’t think that I’m going to get the chance to be the person you need me to be. You deserve someone who’s going to live for you. Not…”
Not someone whose already doomed.
“Why do you always say that?” He hissed, cursing in annoyance. “Why do you always seem to think you’re so done for? Because you have a bloody skull on your arm? Well, I have one of those too.” Draco snapped.
“It’s not just the mark!” She spat out. Anna shook her head. “There are things you can’t understand - things I can’t tell you.”
“Then just tell me.” Draco insisted.
“I can’t.”
His eyes narrowed.
It was almost as if the distance between them had impossibly grew. What used to be a small gap had now turned into a gaping chasm. One that would be impossible to cross without fully acknowledging the truth.
They were at an impasse.
Draco looked away from her. His fists clenched at his sides. “Well, until you can tell me, I don’t think that I can associate with you.”
Her blood pounded in her ears. “Draco…”
“I think we both deserve someone who can confide in us - and someone we can confide in.” His gaze was cold and indifferent, and her heart squeezed.
But isn’t this what she wanted? For him to separate from her? For him to find someone else?
Yet now, when it was finally happening, she couldn’t bear it.
Coward.
“Goodbye, Anna.” Draco murmured. He turned away, stepping into the train.
She didn’t look away - not until the last wisp of chiffon hair disappeared from view.
And then she was running, racing towards the woods. Anna heard shouts from behind her, but she didn’t care. Not anymore.
Because he didn’t care.
Tears welled from her eyes as the soles of her feet pounded against the wet grass, the damp moss cushioning her feet as she tugged off her blouse, discarding her top as she shifted.
Now it was her paws, padding against damp soil as she raced forward, her emotions dulled and at last bearable.
She wasn’t looking forward to when she finally became Anna again. When she’d finally have to deal with the pain and heartbreak.
And then, she felt the gentle tug of teeth gripping the fur at her neck - not sharp enough to pierce, yet strong enough to carry her.
‘Where do you want to go?’ Boudica asked, her voice soothing and calm. She supposed she somewhat understood, even if Anna had never outright told her.
She knew Anna had to die.
And she was possibly the only one who would ever know.
‘Anywhere.’ Anna finally decided, eyes misty. Despite her animal form, her heart still seemed to ache. ‘Anywhere but here.’
Boudica only nodded, and together they went into the distance, though Anna couldn’t quite decipher what they were running towards.
Or rather, what she was running away from.
