~chapter 27: not a confession~
~Dee's pov~
I walk with Y/N down the corridors of school, and people are staring at us from all angles. I know she's uncomfortable too, but she doesn't show it in her expressions.
I guess maybe she sees it as a weakness?
She maintains her unbothered expression until we're almost at class and a particularly smug Sarah Sheven enters the corridor.
Y/N takes a deep breath and grasps onto my hand, pulling me into a conveniently located janitor's supply closet.
We stand inches apart, as she stares out of the small crack on the door which provides her with the scene of Sarah, twirling her hair between her index finger as she swoons over some boy while walking past.
Not only can I hear it, but I can feel Y/N's breath close to my face. She inhales, before looking back towards me rather than the door of the closet.
"Sorry Dee, I just really don't want to have to deal with her right now," she sighed.
"That's not the issue here. The issue is that if we walk out of this closet right now into that hallway full of people, they're gonna get the wrong idea." I say.
"Hmm, you're probably right." She squints looking for a light switch of some sort, but gives up pretty quickly. "We better get comfy then."
We both sit on the hardwood floor of the closet. Y/N brings both of her knees up to her chest, and leans her head on them.
I'd be lying if I said that she didn't look cute like this.
She blinks a few times at the door of the closet, before closing her eyes and nuzzling her cheek onto her knee. I turn my attention away from her before she thinks I'm staring.
"Hey, can I ask you a question?" She says out of the blue, turning to face me.
"Yeah of course," I replied, locking my blue eyes with her e/c ones.
"Why did you become friends with me and B/N?" She asks, but I don't reply, so she explains further. "I mean, surely we've caused you a shit ton of problems. Me and my brother are quite the magnets to trouble. Even after you already befriended us, you could have just dropped us and continued with your life the way it was."
"I-"
I hesitate and think for a minute while she waits patiently.
I think about maybe confessing to her that I sort of maybe have a little crush on her, but I push the thought away after imagining her rejecting me before bursting out of the closet to get away from me.
I decide to instead, subtly hint that I really like her. That way, she doesn't have a chance to reject me in the first place.
"I mean, you guys were just genuinely nice people from day one. Even in detention when you helped me climb out of the window into the rain to get away from Mr Sheven, you slowed down to make sure I wasn't left behind. Plus, it's not very often you find someone you can relate to, in a way that only people who have experienced it can. We're both freaks. Or misunderstood maybe. Either way, your comforting to be around. So much that you're probably my favourite person to be with-."
I stopped myself from going any further before I embarrass myself. By now, I averted my eyes to the dust on the ground. I don't look up, afraid of what I'll see.
That is until a hand comes into view as it slips into mine. I look back up to see her smiling softly at me.
"If it makes you feel any better, you're one of my favourite people to be around too."
"One of?" I question.
"B/N would kill both of us if he knew that you overtook him."
I laughed quietly looking down at my hand as I interlock my fingers with Y/Ns, messing with the familiar ring on her thumb.
"Hey, thanks for this." She said, "It means a lot, especially coming from you."
Especially coming from me?
My face heats up and I can tell that I've gone bright red. Too bad Y/N is really observant, because she seems to notice and lets out a quiet laugh.
She moves her freehand and places it onto my cheek, maintaining eye contact with me. Her palm brushed down my cheek until she lightly grabbed my chin.
It's all happening too quick for me to process and I stop moving. That is until the bell goes off indicating that we have 5 minutes to be in class, and I move my face towards the door of the closet.
Y/N's hand leaves my face and she sighs. We wait for a few minutes until the corridor is empty.
We walk towards our class, however Y/N stops with her hand on the door handle before facing me.
"Hey, do you wanna skip with me?"
I smirk at her and nod before we both stealthily exit the school building and onto the field.
"There's windows all around the school, so they'll be able to see us if we just walk by-" I tell her
"Then why walk?" She asked.
"What?!"
She grasps onto my hand and we both run towards the forest at the back of the school. She looks back at me and laughs at my distraught expression.
It's not until we're far enough into the forest and out of sight from the school that we both ascend into hysterics, adrenaline filling my veins.
I slide my phone out of my pocket and plug in some headphones while loading up mine and Y/N's shared playlist. I push my phone back into my pocket before offering Y/N an earphone, which she gladly accepts and I grab the other for myself.
We both take a seat on the floor with our backs against a fallen tree.
~Y/N's pov~
I look over to my left and see Dee with his head leant back and his eyes closed as his boots tap to the beat of the music.
And I can't say I would want to spend my day any differently.
*Rustle*
Fucking hell...
