Although John Laurens was a good man in his past life, during his spiritual time in the afterlife, he became so bitter that he wanted revenge against Eliza.
However, when Philip was born, he knew that the newborn held a special spot in Hamilton's heart that not even Eliza can go to.
Not only that, Philip was also so close to his mother that if anything happened to Philip, she would lose it.
So, with this new information, he makes it his "job" to basically ruin Philip's mental state by pocessing him & causing him to make him afraid of himself to the point that Philip thinks that he isn't worthy for his father's love.
John Laurens was a manipulative spirit to him & made him believe that he would have to try better to earn his family love.
He was basically that little voice in Philip's head that said, if you're not good enough for your parents, than what good are you?
Not only that, he would threaten Philip for his loved ones' lives so he basically pulled the strings.
Eventually, it went to the point that Philip felt like he had to die for his father's honor, all because of John Laurens.
