January 10, 2009

"Arthur! My water broke!" Alice yelled for me. My eyes widened, and I immediately ran toward her. "Babies are coming?" I said, shocked. I looked around for my car keys and began to carry the overnight bags I had prepared. "Remember! Deep breaths!" I spoke worriedly. She nodded at me and began to breathe in and out.

I grabbed her hand and helped her move toward the car as she held onto her stomach. "Okay, let me put the bags in the car," I spoke worriedly. I quickly did so and immediately got into the car to start driving to the hospital.

"Ugh!!! This is starting to hurt!!" She said, horrified. She suddenly started to scream, and I looked at her, horrified. "Are you okay?-....."

"JUST DRIVE!" She yelled at me. I immediately shut up and began to drive faster. Damn, she was so scary.

When we arrived at the hospital, the nurses helped put her in a wheelchair to take her inside. Another nurse had stopped me from following her and told me to fill out some paperwork.

The nurse had me take a seat as I did it and noticed a television playing in the area. I looked up to see what was playing, and to my surprise, it was Casablanca. I smiled looking at it and continued to fill out the paperwork so they could let me into the room.

The nurses put disposable scrubs on me and let me hold Alice's hand. "Thank goodness you are here," she said to me. I nodded at her and smiled, and squeezed her hand. "Of course," I smiled.

"We are ready for you to push now!" The doctor spoke. I nodded at her, and she began to push. Her hair was messy and sweaty, and she squeezed my hand tightly. "You can do this!! Push!!!" I encouraged. Tears were coming down her cheeks, and her face was extremely red.

It took about twenty minutes for the first baby to come out. "It's a boy!!!" One nurse cheered. Soon after, she began to have contractions again, and the second one was coming.

She suddenly squeezed my hand again and began to yell a lot. She threw her head back and began to breathe heavily between pushes and I felt so bad. "It's okay... you got this," I smiled at her. I began to wipe the sweat away from her face, and she gave me one last push before the baby came out. "Another boy!!" They cheered.

I held her hand as they showed her the two baby boys. "You did it! Good job!" I smiled at her. She winced in pain, and I noticed the heart monitor was beeping really fast. The nurse holding the babies quickly put them down, and I looked at them, confused. "What's going on?" I asked worriedly.

She looked at me sadly and held onto my hands. "Please don't leave me," she begged. I shook my head and nodded to her. "I promise you, I won't ever leave you," I spoke. The nurse tried to remove me from the room, but I refused to leave.

The nurses were yelling and rushing, and I knew it wasn't anything good. "Please... Take care of my boys...." She said slowly. My eyes widened, and I shook my head. "What? Why are you even talking like that?" I asked, horrified. She winced from the pain and began to shake her head. "Please... Promise me you will be there for them... Tell them..... their mothers loved them so much," she began to cry.

I felt tears swell up in my eyes, and I looked at the doctors, worried. Her grip on my hand began to loosen, and suddenly.... There was no grip at all. "Alice? Hey? Don't play around like that! Wake up!!!" I said, horrified.

"GET HIM OUT OF HERE!!" The doctor yelled. My eyes widened, and I pushed the nurses off of me and began to shake her. "Wake up!! Please!!! Don't die on me!!" I said, crying.

I tried to perform CPR on her, but the nurses had ganged up on me and began to drag me out of the room.

Once I was out of the room, I sat outside of the door and began to cry into my knees. Everyone around me just dies. Her children, what if I'm the reason they die?

I wouldn't be able to take that much anguish. I began to hold onto my head and felt everything get dizzy. I was starting to lose my mind. I didn't want to become like Francis all those years ago. I couldn't lose my mind like this.

I pushed my head back against the wall, and a nurse offered me some water. There is nothing in this world I wouldn't do to end this suffering already. Alice was supposed to be a new mom to raise her children.

Now...I?

I suddenly realized something.....

I'll raise them!

I'll be the best father they could ever have! I'll watch them get married and have their own kids and have a wonderful life. They may find out about me one day, but I'll make sure their lives are happy. I wanted to make them the happiest in the world.

"Mr. Kirkland?" A nurse spoke slowly. She had sad eyes, and I knew what she would say. "Would you like to see your sons?" she asked. My eyes widened, and I wiped tears from my eyes. I nodded at her, and she began to take me to a separate room.

"There they are; what are the names going to be?" She asked. My mouth dropped from all the shock, and I finally spoke. "That one will be Alfred... and the other, Matthew," I smiled.

The nurse smiled at me and left me alone for a bit. I couldn't take my eyes off those sweet little boys. I was going to keep my promise to Alice. I will raise those kids and give them the best life they could ever ask for.
