Lucas hasn't heard about the fact that Max was in the skateboard tournament or the fact that she had won. He was just around the corner from Hawkins high remembering what time the school ours end he decided to pick up Erica, seeing how she hasn't seen him since last summer she would be happy.
He parked and got out of the car and walked to the front office to request Erica's early absence.
"Hey, can I get an early release note?" He asked
"Oh of cour-" She stopped mid-sentence. "Lucas? You grew so much! I'm sure Erica will be happy to see you" the lady at the front desk said with a smile
Lucas only nodded back and proceeded to ask which class she's would be in. He walked to his old science teacher's room and knocked.
"Come in" he heard a voice say
"Hey, I'm here for Erica." Lucas said as he walked into the classroom waving and Mr. Clarke who was by coincidence, giving an example to the class with an old project of his and Max. The memories made him teary.
Lucas walked up to Mr. Clarke shook his hand and gave him a hug, "I hope Erica is behaving herself in your class" Lucas teased which earned a "be quiet" from his younger sister.
"Sorry for the interruption class, this is one of my old students Lucas Sinclair, Erica's older brother." Mr. Clarke explained
"Wait, is that one of my old projects?" Lucas asked the teacher
"Yes actually it's yours and Maxine's, I wish she came back to visit even though she was a hassle. I would give her a bunch of old projects after all she did have the best grades in this class. No wonder you two would hang out all the time" Mr. Clarke said
Lucas had a slight red tint to his face when his old teacher said that.
"You know Lucas she's actually doing pretty well now that she has around 4.2M$ to her name." Erica said out loud.
The classes face looked at her with wide eyes as Erica began to pack her things
"Yeah she signed a deal with Vans for 2.8M$ and she won 1.4M$ from the skating championships in California" Erica told her brother who was in utter shock with the rest of the class.
One of the students spoke up, "wait do you mean MADMAX?" There was a pause "wait MADMAX as in the high score in dig dug at the arcade?"
Lucas chuckled as he soon connected the dots. "Yep" (with a popped p) "That Max. Her score has been there since 1985. 800,000 points! I was there when it happened" he kinda said in a bragging tone.
"Wait Erica how do you know? She's never written to any of us let alone you or me" Lucas questioned as the bell rang and the two Sinclairs left the class.
"It was on TV yesterday, you were probably driving when it happened" Erica answered with Lucas nodding back, "you miss her don't you" Erica wasn't stupid she knew Lucas loves Max, and he always has even till now he still does.
"It's ok, I miss her too. She was always the sister that I never had. I adore her." Erica admitted as she hopped into the passenger seat of his car.

When they reached home his parents were more than excited to do their son. They talked in the living room about all the year's events at both Erica's and Lucas's schools. Apparently, Erica has become rather popular with the basketball team as the old coach could be reminded of Lucas so easily.
"I actually have some exciting news. I am being put into the NBA draft! Apparently, several teams are looking at me" Lucas told his family who all gave him a hug along with congratulatory words.
They all sat down and ate dinner talking about the possibilities of teams that he could have been drafted by. But in the back of his mind, he was thinking about one thing that he misses so dearly, it became so hard to process that he sat blankly at the table and didn't talk much. Which to his father was the assumption of tiredness.
"Hey Lucas if you're tired you can go to bed, it must have been a long day" his father gently reassured him.
"Alright if it's ok with you I will"
Lucas got up from his seat and went upstairs to his bedroom it was all the same. The curtains the pictures..her picture. Lucas opened his top drawer to his dresser and looked at the "shrine" as she called it. All of the little tiny things, the snowball tickets the little notes her sunglasses. It was all there and it hit him.
Lucas sat on his bed with his head in his hands, he began to cry. He cried for his feelings, he cried for his friends, he cried for Erica, he cried for the NBA...he cried for her. It hurt him more than he thought he hasn't had a good cry like this for months. He heard footsteps coming up the stairs, he didn't care he didn't try and stop crying, he didn't even try to hold his breath.

*knock knock*
"Lucas, can I come in?" It was a light voice
"Mmhm" he hummed
"Hey Lucas I just want to say your luggage is downs-" his mother paused "Lucas baby what's wrong?" She asked as she sat next to him on his bed, rubbing his back.
Lucas sniffed, "it hurts mom, not being able to talk with your best friend for an entire 4 years and out of the blue becomes famous." He breathes, "she hasn't written in forever not even to El...and all the memories, they just flood back it's emotional." Lucas finished
His mother was not dumb, ever since Max came over to do a science project she knew that Lucas adored her. I'm fact she could see it too she acted like a Sinclair from the start. Strong, opinionated, heartfelt it's what Max was.
"Well baby I know how you feel about her I've known forever, and won't you become famous in just 3 weeks when the draft comes? I have faith you'll get a foot on that court soon" she confronted her son.
"Yeah I guess you're right, I can go over to the Hopper's tomorrow to surprise them, I bet they would be happy. especially Dustin." Lucas said to change the subject away from his love life.
"Yes, of course. you can take Erica too, now go to sleep you need it" she placed a kiss on his cheek and left his room turning the light off as she left.
