02. OFF TO A GREAT START

"SO, LUCAS SINCLAIR HUH? DIDN'T think you'd like 'em young." tina van snickered. from the kitchen, destiny almost spat out her coffee at the statement.

"tina, no." destiny groaned as she placed down the mug. "i just wanted to be nice because he was a nervous wreck like two hours before the game."

"holy fucking shit this hangover is killing me." yvonne spades exclaimed while heading down the stairs. "i am never drinking your dad's foreign shit again, but what about liking them young?"

"remember when destiny went up to the freshman that won the championships?" tina shouted back, still clicking through the television. yvonne walked into the kitchen and took a sip of a random mug on the counter, assuming it was a premade cup for her. yvonne was quick to spit the liquid out and rushed to turn on the sink, washing out the sharp taste of alcohol out of her mouth.

"fuck, fuck, fuck, who left their cognac here?" yvonne whined, gratefully taking the warm cup of coffee from destiny, sighing in relief after taking a cautious sip. "finally, a nonalcoholic beverage."

"jesus, there isn't anything on here. it's just the same shit all over again." complained tina as she clicked through the channels.

"wait tina, stop clicking and turn it up." destiny commanded. stephanie turned it up and the trio sat on the couch to watch.

"...we can confirm that the body of a hawkins high student was discovered early this morning. police have not yet released the victims name or any details regarding the-"

"holy shit." destiny uttered out. "holy fucking shit."

"it's one thing after another in this fucking town." tina mumbled, letting out a shaky breath as she turned off the t.v. "right in the middle of my senior year too?"

"tina, des and i are so fucking screwed we literally can't leave until we graduate." yvonne cried out. "i'm so done with this fucking town." suddenly, the doorbell rang throughout the house. tina hopped off the couch and headed towards the front door, opening it to reveal officer callahan and powell.

"is destiny boswell here? we've been informed that she was here for a sleepover." officer powell questioned. tina stepped aside to reveal the two girls still sitting on the couch. destiny poked her head out to the side at the sound of her full name.

"can you ladies step outside for a minute, we need to talk to destiny privately." tina and yvonne quickly rushed outside and closed the door, leaving destiny alone with the two older men.

"coffee?" destiny nervously offered, who was quickly shot down with shaking heads.

"we've been informed that you and chrissy cuningham are quite close, yes?" callahan questioned while flipping open his notepad.

"yeah practically like sisters," destiny answered, suddenly connecting the dots in her mind. "wait is chrissy the dead student at the trailer park?"

"when was the last time you talked to her?"

"are you gonna tell me if she has anything to do with the dead student?" destiny fought back, getting louder this time. "please don't tell me it's her." the two offficers looked at each other and hesitated, but powell spoke up.

"we're not allowed to reveal too many details... but chrissy was involved." powell said slowly, hoping his statement would ease the younger girl. "don't tell anyone that, des. i'm only telling you this because you're martin's daughter and i don't want to be the one to cause you any panic."

"...i talked to her after the game, when we were packing up to leave." destiny finally spoke. "i invited her to come eat at benny's, but she said she had to be home right away."

"now did she ever talk about an eddie munson? or do you know who that is?"

"no to both."

"she ever talk about doing drugs?" powell interrogated. destiny looked up at him in disbelief. "even dealing them maybe?"

"chrissy and drugs? she doesn't do any of that, that would ruin her reputation as captain." destiny exclaimed. callahan finished his notes and closed his notepad, signaling powell to end the interrogation.

"thank you, destiny. we'll keep in touch if anything." callahan stated before he left the house with powell, and drove off. destiny stood there silently as tina and julie rushed back inside to ask her questions.

"uh, something about my dad. i need to make a private phone call right now." destiny quickly lied, running up the stairs to the landline. "don't eavesdrop, it's illegal." destiny dialed a familiar number and anxiously listened to the phone ring.

"hello?" a familiar voice answered.

"mckinney." destiny exhaled. "is jason there? he told chrissy and i that you guys would be at benny's by now."

"shit destiny, you just missed him. he stormed out and didn't tell us anything." patrick responded. "why what's up?" destiny hesitated for a moment, twirling the cord in her hands before she spoke again.

"did the cops come by and interrogate?"

"yeah, think that's why he even stormed out."

"the cops came by to where i'm at just now. i can't say anything about it unless-"

"hold up jason's here, let me give you the phone." there a split second of silence before another familiar voice spoke through the phone.

"did the cops ask you about chris?" jason whispered.

"yeah, yeah, they did. something about some eddie munson, and drugs and-"

"hey, calm down, you're panicking." jason soothed. "yeah they did." jason heard deep breathing from the other side of the line before destiny started talking again.

"is chrissy the dead body at the trailer park, jason?" destiny breathed out slowly. "powell told me some crap about her being involved but he was just trying to calm me down because he's friends with my fucking dad."

"...i think so. they didn't tell me shit either but it had to be her. i think that freak eddie killed her." jason finally answered and destiny let out a small sob. "i gotta go des, stay safe please." the call ended with a soft click, leaving the girl standing alone in the carpeted hallway. destiny slid down the wall and buried her face into her hands. everything just hurt; her head, her heart, and she felt her throat closing in. spring break was off to a great start. how much more could destiny take?
