I pull my manbun into a ponytail, letting the air wave it in every direction. Leaning forward, I feel the wind push against my skin with more and more pressure. This chilling feeling, this thrilling feeling... I've never felt more at peace.
I soften my landing by pushing air against the ground. I land on my knees, falling forward. I should learn how to stick a landing. I slowly get up, brushing the dirt of my knees. I make sure no one saw me, I'm not ready to become known as a hero yet. That's why I'm here, this was the last sighting of Spider-man, here in the Netherlands.
I speed walk into the village. I'm feeling anxiety out of anticipation, though I'm not expecting this lead to go anywhere. I'm not expecting life to go anywhere if I do find him. But it's all I have right now. Perhaps I can become an avengers, perhaps they can train me. These air powers are still out of control, at this rate I will embarrass myself in public. I don't even have an outfit yet.
I walk into a market, or what used to be one. The people are clearing the area, the festivities are clearly over. I want to find a clue without having to ask anyone, not that I'd know who to ask.I sense someone staring at me in my peripherals. I try to not make it obvious that I notice them. The person tries to back up. I quickly turn my head to see who it is. The person starts sprinting. Adrenaline shoots through my legs. Do I run after them? My legs start sprinting before I can overthink this. Probably for the best. I don't like trusting my gut, because it's baseless, but maybe it'll lead to something this time.
I boost my steps with extra air, almost like my legs have jetpacks in them. I push my fists backward to launch myself upwards. I stumble on a roof and continue the pursuit. I can barely keep up with this person taking turns and disappearing behind corners. I push myself up even harder now, giving me a better view of the alleys. The stranger notices me. I blast myself out of the air, straight down to the person. I feel myself lose control of the direction I was aiming for. I try to dampen the landing but... it's too late. My leg ends up in a trash bin and I toss right over, slamming my face into the ground."Your hero landing needs some work", I hear a male voice say. I look up, the stranger's still here. I wipe my face with my sleeve and groggily get up. "I'm working on it."
He smirks and makes his way over to me. "You alright?"
Trying to focus, I take a good look at him. His voice is familiar somehow. His face is... Holy shit. His face is one that I recognise immediately. My mind blanks at the impossibility of this situation. "You're supposed to be retired", I mutter.
He nods a little. He must've heard this a lot, or was prepared to. "Your reaction tells me you weren't here to find me. Maybe we're looking for the same person."
Listening to his warm voice makes me tingle inside. He's the real deal, charm and all.
"I was wondering if I could be trained by the Avengers or something, aren't you already one?"
"I used to be, now I'm more or a free roamer", he sticks out his hand.
I awkwardly take to long to shake his hand. His grip is firm, his glance is sharp. "Steve Rogers, but you knew that didn't you."
I'd almost tell him that I love him, as Captain America of course, because I'm incredibly professional. "Kelvin Eastcourt", I tell him. "Soon-to-be-called Cloudburst I hope", I continue nervously.
He smiles as he gives me that nod again. "Well Kelvin, how would you like it to help a former Avenger out on a different mission."
