Michael pressed on the gas, the two boys on bikes getting nearer. He swerved to the side and slowed, coasting next to the boys.He rolled the window down to which the boys stopped and looked up at him.Digging in his pants pocket, he grabbed his wallet, flipped it open and pulled two, five dollar bills.
He out-stretched his arm out and smiled at the two boys as they took the bills.
"You did it right? Rigged her car radio?"He spoke over the humming truck.
The two boys snickered and pulled out a stash of wires and some from their pockets. The chief smiled and gave them a thumbs up before pulling off, gesturing his fingers in a 'goodbye' manner.
"Well, he'll have fun listening to country music for the rest of his life." Scott murmured."Did he really think we'd-"
"Who cares, we scammed his ass for five measly bucks?I want my time and efforts back."Murray interrupted, holding the dollar bill up to the sun, his lips wound into an agitated line. "C'mon, lets get Joyce, maybe we can scam that overly nice father of hers."He rolled his eyes and began to pedal ahead, Scott following close behind.
Arriving on Mirkwood, the two rode into the Byers driveway.Acknowledging the lime Ford Pinto in the dirt path, Murray went back to grab the mail from the box, examining its contents beforehand.Scott gave a soft knock on the door as Murray joined him on the porch. The faint sound of rustling alarmed them before the door frantically opened, revealing a distressed Mr. Byers.
"Hey Will-"
"Boys have you seen Joyce?"William panicked, grabbing onto their shoulders with demanding force.
"No she-she came home right after D&D.At least she should have." Scott mumbled, unnerved by the mans close proximity.
"Oh god- god dammit!" William exclaimed covering his eyes with his hands, standing straight. "Well maybe she went to school early. But she's never gone without saying goodbye first- well she is getting older but- no excuse"
"Uhm, here's your mail" Murray mumbled, holding the papers up to him.William snatched them and threw them inside without care.He shut the door, locked it.
"Will-" Murray started
"It's Mr. Byers to you."
".. .Mr. Byers.Your daughter stayed at Jim's house."Murray stated confidently.
"Really" both males stated, one shocked and one confused.Murray looked to Scott, raising his eyebrows as if to insinuate his falsehoods as truth.
"Yeah she turned back after Scott went home and I saw her while taking out the trash. She-uh...She said it was 'too freaky going down the foggy streets' and was going to stay at Jim's. Jim's grandpa was asleep so that's why he didn't get to call. And we saw her going down in Jim's grampa's car, remember Scott."He nudged his friend, who looked away bashfully.
"Yeah.. .yeah they were listening to.. .to Led Zeppelin."He grew quiet at the last words.
William craned his neck out a little with a seemingly lost look."Then .. .Why are you at my house."
"Oh well.. ." Scott fumbled, playing with the hem of his navy blue sweater vest.
"She sent us to get money for the arcade trip tonight. Our parents wouldn't give us any so she told us to ask you."Murray interjected, startling William.
He sighed and pulled his wallet from his pocket.Glancing back down to the boys, he saw the antenna of the groups famous communication device. He stopped digging up the money and looked suspiciously at the boys.
