I was siting in an office, waiting for my possible parents.
"When will they get here?" I asked.
"Maybe never." Came the reply. Wonderful.
The door opened and I saw a pair of humans. I could barely contain my disgust for them.
"Hello!" Said the female one. Her voice wasn't near as annoying as I'd heard before.
"Hi." I whispered, only as loud as I needed to for her to hear me.
"Well, I'm George. Nice to meet you. Excuse me, I must have forgotten your name from the file. What was it, again?" The man asked.
Crap. I don't remember what the file said.
"My name is Annika." I said, deciding to use my real name and hope for the best.
"I'm Isabelle!" Said the woman.
Good to know. George and Isabelle.
"Nice to meet you, too." I said. I can't help but be minimal with my replies, I don't want to mess up.
"Are you okay, sweetheart?" The fe- Isabelle asks.
"Yeah, I'm fine. It's just been a long time since I had to talk to someone."
The matron at the orphanage whispered something to them. But I heard every word. You can't hide anything from me.
"She need talks to any of the other kids. Everyone thinks something's wrong with her; when she does speak, it's like she's read a book a day her whole life."
She doesn't know a single thing about my life.
"Ok. Well then, you seem nice, can you tell me about yourself?" Isabelle asks, turning towards me.
"Well... I don't remember anything before I got here." I lied "I remember waking up in a hospital, but anything before that is blank."
I hear whispers among the two of them: "she's that girl? The one found in a warzone after a nuclear explosion?"
"Yeah. I saw the news reports. That's me."
They both gasped and Isabelle ran up to hug me.
"You poor thing!" She exclaims.
"No, I'm fine" I say. 'I'm strong enough to survive a nuclear explosion and you think a little faked memory loss could phase me?'
I wanted to say. But I couldn't.
