Evelyn hurries me into a brightly lit library, books lined neatly on wooden bookshelves that stand against the walls. "Evelyn, what's wrong?" i ask, pulling out a chair. "I couldn't save you." she whispers, holding her head in her hands, leaning against the table we're surrounding.
"What do you mean?" i frown, resting my arms on the table. She looks to the ceiling and clenches her fists, "I couldn't get the venom out in time." I sit upright, my attention caught, "and what does this mean."
She sharply turns to me, "You're a vampire Alice." The sound of doors opening floats behind me, "It's not ideal, now is it?" I crane my neck around and the older man i met is standing at the pair of marble stairs leading to us, hes holding his cane, his cold pale hands shaking, "We can't let you back into the human world, it's too dangerous." I rise from my seat, "What, that's not how it works, i have a life, i have a home back in Canada!" He smiles and hobbles his way down the stairs, "Don't worry love, that's all sorted out." I shake my head, "No!"
"Why is your main concern that, instead of the fact that you're a blood thirsty vampire?" Jaces sweet voice encircles my mind.
Evelyn puts her hand on my shoulder, "I'm really sorry." I look down at the tiled flooring, "It's not your fault, don't apologize, it's mine."
I gulp and run a hand through my hair, "i need to, just be alone." Turning i see the concerned face of Evelyn's, Jace stands by the doors we entered, his arms crossed. I clench my teeth and walk away, passing Jace coldly.
I fold my arms as i amble down the frigid hall, to the room i occupy. Slamming the heavy door behind me, i run over to the old subdued bed.
I pull my knees up to my chest and position my head on top, my shoulders dropping slowly. I feel the tears rising, threatening to spill out. I start to calmly rock back and forth, the off white bed sheets crinkling underneath me. I cradle my thoughts as well as my arms, i mumble incoherent sentences to myself through my sobs.
I bring my arms up and start to strike my head, clenching my teeth, the inhospitable tears fighting through the barricade.
I make out the faint scratch of the door opening, then the sound of heavy boots hitting the rasping wooden flooring. Suddenly i'm embraced in a cherishing, warm hug.
"Alice...stop that.." Jace whispers, feebly peeling my clenched fists from my sore head.
He places my arms on his shoulders and pulls me onto him, my head hitting his rigid chest.
He leans down near my ear and whispers, "shhh." while stroking my gentle hair.
Hiccuping, i notice how calm he makes me, his tender touch is melting, his soft words are calming. I didn't possibly need anything else, he was my safe space..
